WEEK FOUR FOOTBALL PREVIEWS

COUDERSPORT -- Three key games highlight the schedule in Week Four of the 2001 High School Football Season.

The first key game is in the AML North where Coudersport (3-0) hosts Smethport (3-0) in a game that will go a long way in determining the AML North champion.

The second key game is in the KSAC where Karns City (3-0 overall, 3-0 KSAC) hosts two-time defending KSAC champs Clarion (3-0, 2-0) in a game that could decide the 2001 champion.

The third key game is also in the KSAC where Keystone (2-1 overall, 2-1 KSAC) visits Clarion-Limestone (2-1, 1-1) in a game that holds District 9 playoff implications.

Thirteen other games are also on tap Friday and Saturday in District 9.

SMETHPORT (3-0) at COUDERSPORT (3-0) 7:30 p.m. Friday

COUDERSPORT -- With both teams coming in at 3-0 this game very well could determine not only the AML North champion but could go along way to wrapping up a District 9 Class A Playoff spot for the winner.

Coudersport is coming off a 42-0 win over Port Allegany, and the Falcons have not allowed a touchdown in nine quarters. Ridgway was the only team to score on Coudersport in the first three weeks managing a third-quarter touchdown in Week One. Coudersport has outscored its opponents 77-6 this season.

The key players for Coudersport are junior quarterback Ben Cary, senior tight end Dane Haskins junior running back Zach Hershey and senior running back Mike Maiuro.

Smethport, meanwhile, is coming off a 41-8 win over Otto-Eldred last week. The Hubbers offense has been its main weapon this season scoring 104 points in three games while their defense has allowed only 28.

The key players for Smethport are quarterback Jeff Shostak and tailback Dan Mitchell.

Shostak is a threat to run and throw the ball. He has run for 213 yards and six touchdowns in three weeks while throwing for over 200 more yards and two touchdowns. He has also returned a punt for a touchdown this season.

Last season Smethport beat Coudersport 14-0 at Smethport.

CLARION (3-0 overall, 2-0 KSAC) at KARNS CITY (3-0, 3-0) 7 p.m. Friday

KARNS CITY -- Two-time defending KSAC champion Clarion takes a 21-game regular season unbeaten streak and an 18-game KSAC unbeaten into Karns City Friday night in a game that could move Clarion one step closer to a third straight conference title or almost guarantee Karns City the title if the Gremlins should win.

Clarion is coming off a sluggish 33-0 win over Union Monday night and had only three days to prepare for a Gremlins team that many think is the best in the entire district.

The key players for the Bobcats are senior running back Kyle Cathcart, senior quarterback Ben Bevevino and senior defensive end Greg Larson.

Cathcart, who has won the last two D9Sports.Com District 9 Football Player of the Week Awards, became District 9's all-time touchdown leader when he scored three against Union Monday night. He now has 58 touchdowns in his career including 11 in three games this season. Cathcart has rushed for 753 yards on 68 carries in 2001 and has 3,380 yards rushing in his career. He rushed for 339 yards in Week Two against Redbank Valley and 255 yards Monday against Union.

Bevevino is 12-for-29 this year for 207 yards and four touchdowns.

Karns City is led by its senior running back Billy Graham along with junior quarterback Erik Fuhrer, senior wide receiver Ian Ferguson and senior wide receiver Brian Hilderbrand.

Graham has almost seen the end zone as many times as Cathcart scoring 10 touchdowns while rushing for 374 yards on 52 carries.

Fuhrer, who missed the Gremlins first game with a concussion, is 16-for-27 passing for 303 yards and three touchdowns.

Last season Clarion beat Karns City 21-0 at Clarion.

KEYSTONE (2-1 overall, 2-1 KSAC) at CLARION-LIMESTONE (2-1, 1-1) 7:30 p.m. Friday

CLARION TWP. -- A District 9 Class A Playoff berth could very well be on the line when Keystone visits Clarion-Limestone Friday night in a key KSAC match-up.

The winner of the game will battle Clarion for the KSAC's automatic berth, while also having a front-runner position for one of two District 9 Class A wild card slots.

The key players for the Panthers are quarterback Adam Black and wide receiver Bobby Telesz.

Black is District 9's top passer this season having completed 32-of-71 passes for 533 yards and seven touchdowns. He has also rushed for a touchdown. Telesz has caught four of Black's seven touchdowns including three last week in a 32-12 Keystone win over Moniteau.

The key players for the Lions are quarterbacks Hayden Johnston and J.J. Ferguson and running back Chad Conti and Dan Alderton.

Alderton, who missed most of C-L's season opening loss to Karns City with a shoulder injury and all of the Lions win in Week Two over St. Marys with the same injury, has rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns on just 16 carries. He also has one receiving touchdown. In last week's 48-8 win over West Shamokin, Alderton had six carries for 104 yard and three touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass.

Last season C-L ran over Keystone 51-6 at Keystone.

DUBOIS (3-0) at STATE COLLEGE (2-1) 7 p.m. Friday

STATE COLLEGE -- DuBois travels to State College for a non-conference match-up Friday night between two long-time rivals.

DuBois is coming off a 28-7 win over Brookville Saturday night, while State College lost 25-7 against Altoona Friday night.

State College is the second of five Class AAAA teams on the Beavers schedule. The Beavers beat Central Mountain 13-10 in Week One.

Last year State College topped DuBois 39-20.

CLEARFIELD (2-1 overall, 1-1 D9 League) at Punxsutawney (0-3, 0-2) 7 p.m. Friday

PUNXSUTAWNEY -- Clearfield is looking to win its third straight game while Punxsutawney is looking for its first win of the season when the two teams meet at Punxsutawney Friday night.

The Bison are coming off a 28-22 win over Indian Valley Friday night, while the Chucks fell 49-12 to Bradford Friday.

Clearfield's only loss was a 13-7 setback to Bradford in Week One, while Punxsutawney has lost heartbreakers to both Oil City (21-14) and DuBois Area (16-6) this season.

Last year Clearfield shutout Punxsutawney 27-0.

BROOKVILLE (0-3 overall, 0-2 D9 League) at ST. MARYS (1-2, 0-0) 7 p.m. Friday

St. Marys -- Brookville will be in search of its first win of the 2001 season when it travels to St. Marys Friday night for a match-up with a Dutchmen team that scored 52 points in getting its first win of the season Monday.

Brookville is coming off a 28-7 loss to DuBois Area Friday night, while St. Marys beat A-C Valley 52-20 Monday evening. Brookville has been outscored 107-13 in its first three games, while St. Marys is being outscored 75-65.

Last season St. Marys eked out a 21-20 win over the Blue Raiders when Tony Kopp hit Tim Thompson for a 16-yard touchdown pass with only 45 seconds left in the game.

BRADFORD (3-0) at OIL CITY (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Friday

OIL CITY -- Bradford looks to improve to 4-0 on the season when its travels to Oil City Friday night.

The Owls are coming off a 49-12 win over Punxsutawney Friday night and have outscored their opposition 113-41 in 2001.

Oil City is coming off a 26-0 loss to Titusville Friday night and the Oilers have lost two straight games since opening the season with a 21-14 win over Punxsutawney. The Oilers lost a 28-26 heartbreaker to Erie East in Week Two and have been outscored 68-47 in three games this season.

Last year Bradford won a 46-34 shootout with Oil City.

KANE (1-2) at JOHNSONBURG (2-1) 7:30 p.m. Friday

JOHNSONBURG -- Its almost a must-win game for both teams Friday night when Kane visits Johnsonburg.

A third loss on the season would make it very difficult for the Wolves to make a return trip to the District 9 Class A playoffs, while a second loss would put a lot of pressure on the Rams to have to win out the remainder of the season to make the playoffs.

Kane got its first win of the season last week 28-7 over Eisenhower, while Johnsonburg dropped its first game 24-14 to Curwensville.

Defense has been a problem for the Wolves in the early going, as they have allowed 80 points in three games while scoring 70. The Rams, on the other hand, have outscored their opposition 76-42 in the first three weeks.

Last season Kane beat Johnsonburg 35-21 at Kane.

YOUNGSVILLE (1-2) at EISENHOWER (0-3) 7:30 p.m. Friday

RUSSELL -- Two District 10 teams that play in the AML North meet up Friday night when Youngsville travels to Eisenhower.

Youngsville is coming off a tough 18-16 loss to Sheffield last week, while Eisenhower fell 28-7 to Kane.

Last season Eisenhower squeaked out a 14-13 win.

BROCKWAY (2-1) at RIDGWAY (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Friday

RIDGWAY -- It’s a key AML South game Friday night when Brockway visits Ridgway.

The Rovers can start to distance themselves from a few teams in the AML South race with a win, while an Elker win could just muddy an already murky AML South race. Ridgway also finds itself in a near-must win situation, as three loses would make it hard for the Elkers to qualify for the District 9 Class A playoffs without a lot of help.

Last week Brockway won its second straight game with a 13-6 win over Elk County Catholic Saturday night, while Ridgway lost a hard-fought 8-0 decision to Cameron County.

Last year Brockway beat Ridgway 28-14.

PORT ALLEGANY (0-3) at OTTO-ELDRED (0-3) 7:30 p.m. Friday

DUKE CENTER -- One of these two AML North teams will get their first win of the 2001 season Friday night when Port Allegany travels to Otto-Eldred.

The defending AML North champion Gators have struggled in 2001 losing three games by a combined score of 119-26. Last week Port Allegany lost 42-0 to Coudersport.

Things haven't been any better for the Terrors who are still looking for their first win since the 1999 season. Otto-Eldred has been outscored 102-6 in the first three games this season although it scored its first touchdown in a 41-6 loss to Smethport Friday night.

UNION (0-3 overall , 0-3 KSAC) at A-C VALLEY (0-3, 0-2) 7 p.m. Friday

FOXBURG -- Two down-on-their-luck KSAC teams meet Friday night in Foxburg when Union visits A-C Valley.

The Golden Knights played Clarion strong for a half Monday night and trailed only 12-0 at halftime to the Bobcats before losing 33-0. Union is still looking to get first-year head coach Larry Bliss his first win.

A-C Valley, meanwhile, was routed 52-20 by St. Marys Monday. The Falcons have been outscored 113-35 since taking a 14-0 lead into the final five minutes of the season opener against Moniteau before the Warriors rallied for a 22-14 win.

Last season A-C Valley beat Union 30-8 at Union.

MONITEAU (2-1 overall, 2-1 KSAC) at WEST SHAMOKIN (1-2, 1-2) 7 p.m. Friday

RURAL VALLEY -- In another KSAC match-up Friday night, Moniteau visits West Shamokin.

The Warriors came down to earth a little bit last week falling to Keystone 32-12 Friday night after staring the year off at 2-0.

The Wolves, meanwhile, are coming off a 48-8 loss at Clarion-Limestone Saturday afternoon one week after recording the school's first ever win with a 39-15 win over A-C Valley.

Last year, Moniteau beat West Shamokin 30-22.

CURWENSVILLE (2-1) at ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Saturday

ST. MARYS -- In yet another key AML South game, Curwensville travels to Elk County Catholic Saturday night.

A win by the Golden Tide will help put them in the upper echelon of the AML South, while an ECC win will once again cloud the AML South picture further.

Curwensville is coming off a 24-14 win against Johnsonburg last week, while ECC lost 13-6 to Brockway.

Last season, the defending District 9 Class A champion Golden Tide beat ECC 33-0 at Curwensville.

CAMERON COUNTY (2-1) at SHEFFIELD (3-0) 1:30 p.m. Saturday

SHEFFIELD -- An AML inter-division match-up will take place Saturday afternoon when Cameron County visits Sheffield.

The Red Raiders are coming off an 8-0 win over Ridgway last week, while Sheffield beat Youngsville 18-16.

A Cameron County win would also put the Red Raiders in fine position in the AML South race, while a Sheffield win would put them in good position to have a shot at the AML North title.

The two teams did not meet last season.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY (2-1) at REDBANK VALLEY (1-2) 7 p.m. Saturday

NEW BETHLEHEM -- District 11's Shenandoah Valley, a Class A team located near Hazleton and Pottsville, travels across the state to face Redbank Valley in a non-conference game Saturday night.

The Blue Devils are 2-1 on the season but are coming off a 35-7 loss to Tamaqua last week. They have beaten Lourdes Regional (Week One) 48-15 and Nativity (Week Two) 54-7.

Shenandoah Valley is led by senior running back Ryan McClafferty and junior quarterback Zack Fronk.

Redbank Valley is coming off a 51-7 loss to Karns City Saturday night.

The Bulldogs are led by junior running back Ron Geist and senior quarterback Chris Merwin.
