BRADFORD SEES SEASON END WITH LOSS TO PERRY

WEEK 13 -- PIAA CLASS AAA PLAYOFFS SECOND ROUND

PITTSBURGH – Perry (13-0) scored 22 unanswered second-quarter point to erase a 7-6 deficit and take a 28-7 halftime lead on its way to a 41-7 win over Bradford (10-2) in the second round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs Saturday afternoon at Cupples Stadium on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

Bradford took an early 7-6 lead on 22-yard touchdown run by Elliott George. It marked the first time in 2001 that Perry trailed in a football game. Perry had gone up 6-0 early on a 3-yard run by Gary Lee.

But the Commodores offense and defense woke up in the second quarter. The defense forced two fumbles and special teams a third with the offense turning all three Bradford miscues into touchdown.

The first Bradford fumble of the second quarter came on a Perry sack of quarterback Kevin Rose with the Commodores recovering the ball at the Perry 36-yard line just when it looked as if the Owls were about to expand their lead.

The Perry offense then drove the 64 yards for a touchdown scoring on a 27-yard run by Kelvin Drewery.

The next time Bradford had the football, Rose was once again sacked and once again fumbled the football with Perry recovering at the Bradford 37.

This time the Commodores quarterback Scott Knapp found Eric Wicks for a 20-yard scoring pass to give Perry a 21-7 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff the Owls tried a lateral on the kickoff return, but the ball was fumbled giving Perry great field position deep in Bradford territory with less than a minutes left in the first half.

The Perry offense, though, didn’t need much time to strike again with Wicks catching a 14-yard pass from Knapp to give the Commodores a 28-7 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Perry continued to pile up the points with Lee and Drewery each scoring on runs to put the game away.

George led Bradford with 54 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Jason Casey added 60 yards on 14 carries. The two combined to gain 114 yards or 67.5 percent of the Owls 169 total yards of offense.

For Perry, Drewery ran for 180 yards and two scores on 18 carries with Lee adding nine runs for 698 yards and two touchdowns. Knapp was 6-for-12 passing for 151 yards and two touchdowns, with Wicks catching both scores.
