DUBOIS USES DEFENSE TO DEFEAT PUNXSY

WEEK TWO

By RICH RHOADES

DuBOIS – The DuBois Beavers kept their perfect record intact with a 16-6 win over visiting Punxsutawney Friday night at E.J. Mansell Stadium in the District 9 League opener for both teams.

Similar to last week’s 13-10 win at Central Mountain, the 2-0 Beavers played good defense and made the big plays on offense when they needed to.

Beavers quarterback Chad Hilliard completed 5 of 9 passes for 145 yards, tossing a 24-yard screen pass for a touchdown to Josh Campbell late in the third quarter. The score answered Punxsutawney’s lone touchdown of the game on the previous possession and kept the Beavers comfortably in front of the Chucks.

The Chucks opened the second half with a 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive that culminated with quarterback Joe Martin’s 19-yard TD pass to Dustin Guidash on a fourth-and-12 play from the DuBois 19.

But DuBois, which watched the Chucks eat up almost the first eight minutes of the second half, responded and drove 70 yards on eight plays. Hilliard’s screen pass to Campbell on third-and-23 didn’t look like a scoring play, but Campbell dodged a few tacklers and skipped into the end zone down the right side line for the score.

"We bounced back," DuBois head coach Lon Hazlet said. "We go the length of the field and Josh Campbell makes a great football play. He should have been tackled out here in the flat, but he makes two guys miss and goes down the sideline, and he made a great play."

DuBois scored on its first possession of the game when Derek Marshall blasted through the left side for a 66-yard touchdown run. Marshall finished with 110 yards on 14 attempts, his second straight 100-yard effort.

The Beavers made it 10-0 with a nice late drive in the second quarter thanks to Brian Gearhart’s interception of a Martin pass near the goal line. Gearhart returned the pickoff to the Beavers’ 29. Two plays later, Hilliard connected with Mark Jones on an inside screen pass. Jones took it 50 yards to the Chucks’ 9.

An offensive pass interference penalty on Jones in the end zone two plays later pushed the Beavers’ back to the Chucks’ 18. DuBois then sent out kicker Mark Guthridge to attempt a 36-yard field goal and the starting goalkeeper for the soccer team delivered with seven seconds left in the half.

DuBois outgained Punxsutawney, 284-183. The Beavers’ Hazlet was happy with the effort.

"I definitely saw an offensive improvement," Hazlet said. "Defensively, we didn’t play as well as we would have liked and we bent a lot more than we had hoped to, but we lost Ed Fox in the second quarter and Rob Fay wasn’t 100 percent."

Both linemen suffered injuries. Fox suffered a sprained knee and will be out seven to 10 days, according to Hazlet.

Next Friday, DuBois visits Brookville in another District 9 League contest next while Punxsutawney (0-2 overal, 0-1 D-9 League), travels to Bradford.
