WEEK TWO

SHEFFIELD – The Sheffield Wolverines used an opportunistic offense and a sledge hammer defense to defeat the Eisenhower Knights 27-0 in an AML Northern Division contest Saturday in Sheffield.

It all started innocently enough.

Sheffield went four and out, and Ike set up on its own 27. A penalty wiped out a huge gain by receiver Ryan Irwin and forced the Knights to punt. Byron Drew fielded the punt on the Knight 45, juked and jived his way to a score with 7:33 to go in the first quarter. Sheffield led 6-0.

The Knights proceeded to take over five minutes off the clock on their next drive going 66 yards in 13 plays, but the drive stalled on the Sheffield 15.

After two possessions, Sheffield's Robin Copley stepped in front of Jacoby Curtis pass and returned the interception to the Eisenhower 16-yard line.

Six plays later, Vince Werner bulled into the end zone from one yard out, and the Wolverines led 12-0 at the half.

The Knights came out fired up for the second half. Two straight 8 yard runs by Ike's Tom Kibbey gave them their only first down of the second half.

From that point on, the Sheffield defense led by Jamar Mills continually pressured Curtis, sacking him 6 times, and generally wreaking havoc with the Ike offense.

Earl Holt, who had just 19 yards rushing in the first half, finished with 106, as Sheffield pounded Eisenhower into submission.

Holt and Werner each scored one time in the fourth quarter. Holt ran in a conversion and Nik Obenrader tacked on an extra point kick to make the final 27-0 Sheffield.

The Sheffield defense held Eisenhower to minus nine yards in the second half.

Sheffield, now 2-0, travels to Youngsville on Friday. The 0-2 Knights entertain the Kane Wolves on Friday.
