WEEK THREE

EMPORIUM – Cameron County tailback Scott Horning’s 129 yards and one touchdown powered the Cameron County Red Raiders to an 8-0 win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday night at Cameron County.

"We played a good team tonight and our kids were up for the task," said Raider coach John Fragale. "We had several scoring opportunities, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. I have a lot of respect for Mark (Morelli) and the Ridgway program. Both teams were prepared, and they both played a great defensive game."

The pre-game ceremonies began on a somber note, as did many throughout the United States, with a moment of silence for the casualties and families of the World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attacks. This was followed by the Star Spangled Banner and what came next was a very touching and inspirational rendition of Amazing Grace sung by the Cameron County High School Marching Band, who was then joined by everyone in attendance.

On Ridgway’s first possession, a long pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Cameron County 25-yard line. Three plays later and still on the Raider 25-yard line, the Elkers attempted a long field goal that came up short allowing the Raiders to take over on their own 20-yard line.

Horning picked up a quick seven yards and followed that with a powerful 22-yard gain to midfield. Three running plays by Raider quarterback Gideon Hornung moved the ball to the 39-yard line where the drive stalled.

Following a punt, the Elkers took the ball over at their own 11-yard line. On their first play from scrimmage, a fumble occurred with Cameron County’s David vonArx pouncing on the loose pigskin at the Elker 20-yard line.

It only took one play for Horning to find the end zone and register the lone touchdown of the evening. Horning slipped though a miniature hole and sprinted to the end zone with 2:14 to go in the first quarter. The point after sailed wide left to leave the score at 6-0.

The second quarter was highlighted by big defensive plays by both teams.

An interception and a fumble recovery on a lateral pass by Cameron County’s Adam Kesterholt along with an interception that included a 55-yard return by Cameron’s Eric Campbell thwarted three of Ridgway¹s possessions.

But Ridgway’s defense also registered big plays in the quarter by forcing two Raider fumbles. Both fumbles occurred when the Raiders were inside their opponent’s 20-yard line.

The teams went into the locker room with the score 6-0 in favor of Cameron County.

The second half proved to be much of the same as it was low on scoring, high on defense.

Ridgway moved the ball on a 15-play drive to the Raider 16-yard line. For the second time in the game, they lined up for a field goal attempt. Cameron County¹s Jon Doud found a hole in the protection and blocked the attempt with Horning recovering the ball at the Red Raider 25-yard line.

On their next possessions, both teams threatened to score by moving into their opponents territory but came up empty as the defenses tightened when they had to.

Cameron County finally found the break that they were looking for midway through the fourth quarter. With Ridgway pinned deep in their own territory, the Ridgway punter fielded a low snap from center and inadvertently put a knee to the ground in the end zone for a two-point safety for Cameron County making the score 8-0.

From that point, the Red Raiders managed to control the clock and secure their second win of the season.
