BLACK PASSES KEYSTONE OVER MONITEAU

WEEK 3

By Chris Rossetti

KNOX – Adam Black threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another touchdown, as Keystone (2-1) took advantage of five first-half turnovers by Moniteau to beat the Warriors (2-1) 32-12 in a KSAC match-up Friday night at Keystone.

Black went 14-for-26 in piling up the 262 yards with Bobby Telesz being his main target. Telesz caught eight passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns.

"We were able to take advantage of them playing us one-on-one in the first half," Keystone head coach Dan Reed said. "It is pretty hard to ask a kid to play another kid one-on-one when the athletes are even like they were tonight. Adam put the ball right where it needed to be, and Bobby had a real good game. He had the kid who was covering beat for anything he wanted in the first half."

Most of Black’s, Telesz’s and the rest of the Panthers yards were racked up in the first half when Keystone took advantage of the five miscues by Moniteau to out gain the Warriors 214-74 including 203-19 in the air as Black went 11-for-18 for 203 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Telesz had seven of his eight catches in the first half for 118 yards and three scores.

Of the five Moniteau turnovers, four were fumbles and one was an interception. In all the Warriors fumbled the ball six times in the opening half losing four of them including two by Ryan Jackson on fair catch attempts on punts and one on a botched kickoff by Keystone.

"We made too many mistakes," Moniteau head coach Tom Kidder said. "We got away with turning the ball over four times in each of our first two games, but not tonight. We have some kids who are having some trouble finishing off what they have done during the week on Friday nights. I don’t know why that happens. In the second half we put some other guys in there and played the way we wanted to from the beginning, but it was too late. We aren’t built to come from behind."

At halftime, the Warriors were trailing 32-6, but in the second half they outgained Keystone 110 yards to 72 yards and outscored the Panthers 6-0. But in order to do that, Moniteau ran a second-half drive that took 9:19 off the clock but resulted in only six points.

Keystone got the first score of the night taking advantage of a Moniteau fumble that gave the Panthers the ball inside the Warrior 30-yard line. The touchdown came on a 2-yard run by Black with 4:49 left in the opening quarter. Chris Metcalf added the extra point giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead.

After getting the ball back on another fumble, Keystone went up 14-0 when Telesz caught a 15-yard strike from Black to score his first touchdown of the game with 3:40 left in the opening quarter. Metcalf once again tacked on the extra point.

A third Warrior turnover resulted in another score by Keystone this time of a 37-yard pass from Black to Telesz with 1:08 left in the opening quarter. The snap on the extra point was high, and Metcalf’s desperation pass was broken up leaving the Panthers with a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Yet another turnover by Moniteau led to the Panthers next score. This time Black found a wide-open Billy Colwell for a 43-yard strike with 8:52 left in the first half. The two-point conversion pass failed, but Keystone now led 26-0.

Moniteau finally got on the board when Pat Rumbaugh found Jackson with a 19-yard pass with 1:52 left in the first half cutting Keystone’s lead to 26-6.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Warriors tried an on-side kick. The ball, however, failed to go the required 10 yards giving Keystone the football at the Moniteau 49-yard line with 1:48 to play in the half.

That was enough time for Black to find Telesz with a 12-yard scoring strike. The two-point conversion was no good, but with 21.4 seconds left in the first half Keystone held a commanding 32-6 lead.

In the second half, Moniteau embarked on that 18-play drive that took up over nine minutes and resulted in a 7-yard run by Staab with 8:30 left in the game. The score cut the Panther lead to 32-12.

Moniteau then recovered the ensuing pooch kick at the Keystone 30-yard line, but the Warriors couldn’t get a first down giving the ball back to Keystone and effectively ending the game.

NOTES: Before the start of the game, both schools honored those lost in Tuesday’s tragedy. Both teams bands, cheerleaders and football players formed "USA" on the field, and the Keystone choir led fans in renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner", "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America". There was also a couple of prayers from community and student leaders, and the local rescue squads honored the rescue workers by blaring their sirens and flashing their lights in a touching display. The local American Legion posts presented the colors as well, and all of the fans were given candles that were lit during the ceremony. Keystone also sold raffle tickets for American Flags with the proceeds being donated to the Red Cross. Over $300 was raised for the Red Cross.
