ST. MARYS -- Dan Fox rushed for 182 yards and two
touchdowns to lead St. Marys (1-2) to its first win of the season, a 52-20
pounding of visiting A-C Valley (0-3) Monday night.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved to Monday because of last week's tragedies. The Flying Dutch ran out to a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 38-14 at halftime. St. Marys then outscored A-C Valley 14-6 in the second half to get the win. Randell Osche got St. Marys' first score on a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:23 left in the first quarter giving the Dutchmen a 6-0 lead. Brandon Bennett then found Tony Kopp for a 12-yard pass with only 14 seconds left in the quarter and Dan Fox ran for the two-point conversion giving St. Marys a 14-0 lead. That is what the score looked like it was going to be heading to the second quarter, but Rich Luchini intercepted a Mike Stewart pass at midfield and took it 50 yards for a touchdown as time expired. Fox's run gave the Dutchmen the 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter On its first possession of second quarter, A-C Valley's Zach Heeter ran 56 yards for a touchdown and then ran for the two-point conversion cutting St. Marys' lead to 22-8 with 11:43 left in the first half. Fox got the score back for St. Marys on an 11-yard run with 9:27 left, and Kevin Klock caught the two-point conversion giving St. Marys a 30-8 lead. A-C Valley cut the score to 30-14 when Josh Defibaugh caught a 13-yard pass from Stewart with 7:45 left in the half. St. Marys, though, came right back on a 14-yard pass from Bennett to Kopp with 1:15 left in the half giving the Dutchmen a 38-14 lead after the two-point conversion run by Fox. A 33-yard run by Fox with 1:21 left in the third quarter and a two-point run by Fox gave the Dutchmen a 46-14 lead. Osche then finished off the St, Marys' scoring with an 8-yard run with 1:56 left in the game. A-C Valley finished off the scoring on a 61-yard run by Brad Hurrelbrink with 1:24 to play.
