WEEK FOUR

SHEFFIELD – Respect is not just given, it has to be earned.

The Cameron County Red Raiders are earning it more and more each week. With another strong defensive effort, the Raiders posted their third win of the season by stopping the previously unbeaten Sheffield Wolverines 21-12 Saturday afternoon at Sheffield.

After stopping Sheffield dead in their tracks on their first possession, Cameron County found themselves pinned deep in their own territory. On the third play from scrimmage, Sheffield¹s linebacker, Jimmy Mosher picked up a loose ball and raced 24 yards to the end zone for the first score of the game. Cameron County blocked the extra point attempt to make the score 6-0 in favor of Sheffield.

Cameron County came back quickly starting at their own 16-yard line. Raider quarterback Gideon Hornung hit Gary Clark for 12 yards to the Cameron 28.

Two plays later Hornung found wideout Scott Aikens open on a 52-yard fly pattern moving the ball to the Sheffield 20-yard line.

Scott Horning crashed up the middle for a 15-yard gain to the 5-yard line, which set up the Raiders first score.

Hornung rolled right and spotted tight end Joe Malizia in the corner of the end zone, tying up the score at 6-6. Clark rumbled in for the two point conversion to make it 8-6.

Sheffield¹s next three possessions resulted in turnovers with interceptions by Cameron¹s Gideon Hornung and Kyle Vogt and a fumble recovery by Adam Kesterholt.

However, the Red Raiders also ran into problems protecting the ball as they were intercepted twice by the Wolverine secondary during the second quarter.

On Sheffield’s last possession before half they put on their only lengthy drive of the game.

Starting at their own 25-yard line they moved the ball down the field in eight plays to the Red Raider 1-yard line.

Luckily for the Raiders time ran out before the Wolverines ran in, as the drive ended at the 1-yard line as the horn sounded for the half.
"Nobody stuck out on defense, everybody played hard for a total team effort," Cameron County head coach John Fragale said. "We held them at the line of scrimmage for most of the game. We are playing like a team. I am really proud of them for that!"

In the third quarter, the Raiders took advantage of a snap that sailed over the punter's head by recovering the ball at the Wolverine 19-yard line.

Tailback Adam Kesterholt carried the ball three successive times to the 7-yard line. Scott Aikens was stopped just short of the goal at the 1-yard line, but Gary Clark finished the job by plowing in for the score. The kick failed but the Raiders lead by the score of 14-6.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Sheffield reminded the Red Raiders that the game was not yet over.

Taking possession at their own 30-yard line, Sheffield tailback Earl Holt went around the right end and turned on the afterburners to race 70 yards for the score. The Wolverine¹s two-point conversion was stuffed and the score was left at 14-12 in favor of Cameron County.

Hornung put the final touches on the victory as he hit fullback Gary Clark on a 10-yard rollout for the Raider’s final score. Jon Doud added the extra point to make the final score 21-12.

Cameron County (3-1) returns to action next Friday with a home game against Elk County Catholic.
