JOHNSONBURG – Francis Jovenetti ran for 251 yards and two touchdowns
on 27 carries as the Johnsonburg Rams won an AML South Division battle
over the Kane Wolves 28-13.
Kane won the coin toss and elected to receive. A good kickoff return by
Justin Jefferds set the Wolves up first-and-10 from the Johnsonburg 49.
Using a no huddle offense to perfection, the Wolves marched 49 yards in
7 plays for the games first score, an 8-yard toss from Tyler Smith to Hugh
Rich. Jared Cecchetti nailed the extra point, and Kane led 7-0 with 8:42
to play in the first quarter.
The Rams came right back with a nifty eight-play, 64-yard drive on their
first possession. Jovenetti had three carries in the drive for a total of
53 yards. Ryan Yurchick caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Francis
Iorfido, and Adam Chadwick drilled the first of four perfect extra point
kicks to tie it up 7-7.
Both teams seemed to stall offensively for the rest of the first quarter
and most of the second as defense took over control of the game.
Kane's fourth possession of the first half looked promising. Tyler Smith
hit a streaking Justin Jefferds behind the Ram's secondary for a 62-yard
gain to the Burg 12-yard line. The Rams defense stiffened forcing Kane to
try a field goal on fourth down. Jared Cecchetti's kick was wide right,
and the Rams took over on their own 20.
Jovenetti ripped off runs of 25 and 16 yards on the first two plays. Four
plays later, Iorfido passed to Mike Carter for a 6-yard gain to set the
Rams up on the Kane 26. Jovenetti took the next hand off and ran over,
around and through the Kane defense for the score. Chadwick's kick made it
14-7 Burg at the half.
At the start of the second half Adam Chadwick took the second half kickoff
and raced 85 yards for a score that would be nullified by a Ram penalty.
The Rams couldn't find the end zone on this possession.
But the Wolves turned the ball over on a bad exchange at their own 15,
and Iorfido sneaked in two plays later from the 1-yard line for
Johnsonburg. Chadwick's conversion made it 21-7.
Jovenetti's beautiful 53-yard run with 9:54 to go in the game gave the
Rams an insurmountable 28-7 lead. The Wolves responded with a drive of
their own a minute and a half later with Tyler Smith scoring from three
yards out to make the final Johnsonburg 28, Kane 13.
The Rams are now 3-1. The Wolves fall to 1-3.
