PORT ALLEGANY – In a season that has been filled with big plays, the Sheffield Wolverines got back to smash mouth football Saturday afternoon in Port Allegany. The Wolverines' offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage in a 35-6 win.

The game's first 19 minutes featured no offense, but the final five minutes of the first half, featured three scoring drives.

Actually, it appeared that Port Allegany had gotten the first break of the game
when Sheffield's Robin Copeley bobbled a punt and Port Allegany's Adam Rohrer fell on it inside the Wolverine 25-yard line. But offsetting personal foul penalties nullified the play.

Sheffield then got on the board a few minutes later when fullback Mathew Potts scored on a 2-yard run. Vince Werner's fumble recovery on the Gator 35 set that score up. The PAT was blocked.

Port Allegany roared back down the field as Tony Flint hit Claude Haskins on passes of 15 and 31 yards. Rohrer then hit the end zone from four yards out to tie it at six.

The tie lasted less than two minutes, as Sheffield Quarterback Nik Obenrader scored from six yards out on a roll out and then he hit Byron Drew with the two-point conversion. Obenrader's 20-yard scramble was the key play of the drive, and Sheffield led 14-6 at the half.

The second half saw the Sheffield defense start bringing the heat on Flint with Jamar Mills and Rusty Barr each recording sacks.

Following a short punt Vince Werner took a handoff and cut back and raced 17 yards into the end zone for the TD. He added the two-point conversion, and the Wolverines had a 22-6 lead.

The Gators would mount one more drive, but after crossing midfield the Sheffield D sacked Flint again.

Sheffield added two fourth quarter scores, a 15-yard run by Earl Holt and another 15 yarder by Jimmy Mosher.

The Wolverines are now 4-1 and host Smethport Saturday in an AML North battle for first place. Port Allegany falls to 1-4.
