WEEK SEVEN

KANE – Hunting season began this weekend but the Kane Wolves and the Cameron County Red Raiders we not hunting for small game. They were both hunting for a way to put a "W" in the win column.

Cameron County was able to hold off the Wolves on a soggy, rain drenched field for a 15-10 victory Friday night at Kane.

A relieved Red Raider coach John Fragale was smiling after the game.

"I think the rain may have affected them more than it affected us because of their passing game," Fragale said. "We practiced all week on containing the quarterback in the pocket, and tonight we were able to do that. I canąt say enough about how well our defense played tonight."

Cameron County senior fullback Gary Clark did it all as he scored a touchdown, registered three sacks, one for a safety, had an interception and rushed for 88 yards on 9 carries . Wide receiver Scott Aikens also hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Gideon Hornung to help lead the Raider attack.

The Red Raiders struck first three minutes into the first quarter. Cameron’s Hornung hit Aikens on a fly pattern for a 65-yard scoring strike on just their third play from scrimmage. Eric Campbell added the point after for a quick 7-0 lead.

From that point, both teams’ defenses took control of the game.

Kane held Cameron County to two first downs over their next three possessions. Two punts and an interception by Tim Smith kept the Raider offense in check.

The Red Raider defense also stepped it up registering five sacks in the first half. Several times during the half, the Wolves offense crossed mid field only to come up empty as the Raider defense tightened.

Kane’s head coach Craig Wensel was shaking his head after the game.

"Defensively we played well tonight," Wensel said. "We need to take care of opportunities that are given to us. The field possession in the first half was all in our favor and we just didn’t capitalize on that.

"Each week we are improving but we just canąt seem to put the teams away."

Cameron County finally got its offense on track late in the first half. Hornung hit Eric Johnson for a 22-yard gain to the Kane 26-yard line. A penalty moved the ball back to the Kane 43.

Hornung promptly ran wide on the slippery field for an 18-yard gain.

Facing a third-and-9, Hornung hit Jon Songer for a 9-yard gain for a first down.

Scott Horning took the ball to the 5-yard line, and Gary Clark finished the drive by crashing up the middle for the second Raider score. The score was 13-0 after a failed extra point attempt.

Kane controlled the third quarter.

On Kane’s second possession after the half its started at its own 34-yard line.

Running plays by Tim Smith, Tyler Smith and Justin Erickson moved the ball to the Raider 40-yard line.

Tyler Smith dropped back and hit Mike Jamerson with a 40-yard touchdown pass to put six points on the board. Smith again went to the air for the conversion as he found Hugh Rich in the end zone to make the score 13-8.

On the ensuing kickoff momentum took over and Jared Cecchetti kicked the ball out of Cameron County’s end zone to pin the Red Raiders at their own 20-yard line.

A penalty moved the Raiders back to the 8-yard line.

Two plays later, Wolf defensive end Todd Christian sacked the Raider quarterback in the end zone for a safety closing the scoring gap to 13-10.

Kane got the ball back and moved to the 11-yard line where they lost possession of the ball on downs along with their momentum.

The fourth quarter saw the Red Raiders start a drive at their own 43-yard line.

Gary Clark found a crack in Kane’s interior defense and sprinted 50 yards to the Kane 7-yard line.

Four plays later Kane took control of the ball on their own 1-yard line after a tough goal line stand kept Cameron County out of the end zone.

Pinned deep in their own territory Kane tried to pass, but Clark wrapped up the Wolf quarterback in the end zone to register a safety for Cameron County extending its lead to 15-10.

The last three minutes were fast and furious as Kane’s Justin Jefferds and Tyler Smith recovered fumbles to give the Wolves extra attempts to score.

Gary Clark finished off the Wolves hopes by picking off a pass as time was running down to end the game.
