CLEARFIELD RUNS OVER BALD EAGLE ARE

WINGATE – The Clearfield Bisons improved to 6-1 with by soundly defeating the Bald Eagle Area Eagles 49-14 Friday night at Bald Eagle.

The Bisons, unbeaten since their season opening loss to Bradford, used a firs- half punishing ground game, perfect passing and swarming defense to take a 42-0 halftime lead on its way to victory.

BEA won the opening toss and opted to defer to the second half.

Clearfield took the opening kickoff and marched 68 yards on six plays aided by a 15-yard face mask penalty.

Staying on the ground, senior fullback Matt Meckey scored on an 11-yard touchdown run off left tackle with 10:00 remaining in the first quarter. Brian Mohney added the PAT.

The Bison defense, which held its opponent to a minus 8 yards on 14 carries in the first half, forced the Eagles to punt after a three and out.

The Bison offense took over at the BEA 43 and moved downfield.

Tailback Dave Richards 35-yard TD run was negated by a motion penalty and on the ensuing play the Bisons turned the ball over on a fumble at the BEA 11-yard line.

The Eagles crossed into Clearfield territory on a 37-yard pass play from QB Marc Fisher to Brandon Confer. The defense held and forced another punt.

Clearfield took over and junior quarterback Mike Sayers immediately hit tight end Justen Altemus in stride with a perfectly thrown pass which he hauled and outraced the Eagle defenders 46 yards for his first career receiving touchdown. Mohney hit the PAT and the score was 14-0 with 1:39 left in the first period.

After defensive end Thomas Yeager sacked Fisher for 7-yard loss the Eagles were again forced to punt.

Richards fielded the punt and returned it 13 yards to the BEA 30-yard line.

Following two short runs. Richards took the ball up the middle, cut back to his right and ran it in from 23 yards. The PAT was scored by Mohney and the score was 21-0 with 10:20 remaining in the half.

The Eagles managed a first down on their next possession before punting the ball away.

Bison split end Todd Shaw then broke double coverage and gathered in a 31-yard strike from Sayers to the BEA 18-yard line.

One play later, Richards took the ball around right end broke two tackles and scored from 17 yards out. Richards had an outstanding half of play gaining 142 yards on 17 carries and scoring two touchdowns. The PAT by Mohney was again perfect and the score moved to 28 -0 with 1:47 remaining.

The Bison defense held the Eagles and forced yet another punt.

The offense took over at the BEA 47, and Meckey finished off the drive with a 7-yard TD run. Brian Mohney added the PAT giving the Bisons a 35-0 edge with 1:47 remaining.

The Eagles returned the kickoff to their 30-yard line where on the ensuing play senior inside linebacker Corey Picard picked off a Monte Rockey pass at the BEA 44.

After two Dave Richards carries for 27 yards , Matt Meckey took a swing pass from Mike Sayers, broke several tackles and scored from 15 yards out. The senior fullback ended the half with two rushing and one receiving touchdowns, while Mike Sayers completed 4 passes on 4 attempts for 94 yards and two touchdowns. The Mohney PAT made the halftime score 42-0.

In the second half Bald Eagle Area had two scoring drives late in the fourth quarter on a 23-yard run by running back Jon Heverly and a 10-yard pass play from quarterback Monte Rockey to tight end Eli Halterman. Heverly also ran in a two point conversion.

The final Bison score resulted on an attempted on-side kick which was fielded cleanly by Clearfield's Jonathan "Sweets"Graham who raced 50 yards for the score. With Rob Kulling adding the PAT the final score was Clearfield 49 BEA 14.

Clearfield is on the road next week at St.Marys.
