WEEK EIGHT

By Paul Costa

SMETHPORT -- The Smethport Hubbers completed their undefeated regular season Friday night at Mike Shine Field in Youngsville defeating the hosts 36-7.

In scoring six times, the Hubber offense spread the ball around with five different players finding the end zone. Unfortunately, the Hubbers were 0-6 on conversion tries.

Senior tailback Eric Raydo, who racked up 87 yards on the night, scored twice.

A Jeff Shostak to Steve Bartas pass was good for six and later in the second half, a Shostak to Ray Greene aerial netted another TD.

Rarely used fullback, Chuck Duffy, was a workhorse on offense for the Hubbers, gaining 55 yards on 11 carries. His efforts paid off in the third quarter when he blasted past a tired Eagles secondary for 19 yards and the score. Shostak closed out the scoring early in the last stanza, outracing the Eagles' secondary 87 yards on the option. For the night he picked up 116 yards on 5 carries.

Late in the third quarter, Youngsville quarterback, Jesse Walters hit Jamie Blum for a 46-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 36-7 but the damage was done.

Clean uniforms on both sides of the line finished out the contest. For the contest, Smethport outgained the Eagles 279 to 64 on the ground but the margin in the air was much closer; the Hubbers holding a slim lead of 171 to 136.

Raydo led the Hubber defense with 13 tackles, followed by Matt Leet with 7. Greene and Bartas each recorded an interception.
