CLARION -- It was an exciting first week of high school football action in District 9 with some close games, great comebacks and a couple of surprises all thrown in. Below is a wrap-up of Week One's action.

DUBOIS' DEFENSE EXCELS IN WIN OVER CENTRAL MOUNTAIN

LOCK HAVEN - DuBois held Central Mountain to just 129 yards of total offense in a 13-10 win Saturday night in Lock Haven.

While the Beavers' defense was stopping Central Mountain cold, Derek Marshall was hot, real hot, by gaining 176 yards on just 15 carries. Marshall also scored on a 9-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The Beavers rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 10-6. The game-winning score was in the third quarter when Josh Campbell scored on a 43-yard run.

DuBois outrushed Central Mountain 222-96. 

COUDERSPORT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF RIDGWAY MISTAKES FOR WIN

RIDGWAY - Although dominated in most offensive categories, Coudersport was able to turn two Ridgway turnovers into 13 points, as the Falcons defeated the Elkers 21-6 Friday.

In fact, Ridgway (0-1) outgained Coudersport 238-197, but the Falcons opened up a 15-0 lead after three quarters en route to the victory.

Coudersport (1-0) got its first score on a 70-yard interception return by Jeremiah Frederick in the first quarter and scored again in the second frame on a 15-yard TD run by Zach Pucci.

The Elkers got on the board in the third on 37-yard touchdown reception by Jesse DePanfilis but hurt themselves again when Coudy's Ross Simcoe scored on an 11-yard fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter.

Ridgway quarterback Brandon Steger had a rough outing by being picked off twice.

SMETHPORT MARKS DEFILLIPI'S RETURN WITH WIN

BROCKWAY - Smethport quarterback Jeff Shostak scored all three of the Hubbers' touchdowns (1 pass, 2 run), and helped Smethport give coach Carl Defillipi a win in his first game back on the sidelines with a 21-6 victory over Brockway Friday.

The Hubbers (1-0) also shut down Brockway (0-1) in the first half, holding the Rovers to 78 yards of offense in the first half and outgained Brockway 259-160.

Meanwhile, Shostak went 5-of-12 for 117 yards, including a 16-yard TD to Steve Bartas, and rushed for 91 yards on 14 carries including TD runs of 83 and 16 yards.

Brockway's lone touchdown was 2-yard run by Jon Cantafio.

CURWENSVILLE ROLLS OVER OTTO-ELDRED

CURWENSVILLE - Ryan Bilger and Joe Bennett rushed for over100 yards each to lead Curwensville to a 40-8 win over Otto-Eldred Friday night.

Bilger carried the ball only nine times for 113 yards and scored three touchdowns (20, 2, 61). Teammate Bennett rushed the ball 15 times for 104 yards and scored on a 1-yard run. Mark Records contributed for the Tide (1-0) as well with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 17-yard TD reception.

CAMERON COUNTY BEATS YOUNGSVILLE

EMPORIUM - Cameron County's Scott Horning rushed for 93 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 7-yard touchdown run, as the Red Raiders defeated Youngsville 22-7 Friday night.

Gary Clark also scored for Cameron County (1-0) by finding the endzone on a 7-yard run, while Scott aikens sealed the win with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the game.

Youngsville's lone score was on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Walters to Greg Luther in the second quarter. 

Walters went 12-of-38 for 138 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

KEYSTONE STARTS SEASON OFF WITH A BANG

RIMERSBURG – Keystone got its 2001 season off to a good start with a 32-8 win over Union in the season and KSAC opener for both teams Friday night at Union.

Senior quarterback Adam Black led the charge for the Panthers going 14-for-25 for 255 yards and three touchdowns.

Black threw touchdowns passes to Billy Colwell (44 yards) and Bobby Telesz (48 yards & 28 yards). Also scoring for Keystone were Cody Shaner on a 54-yard run and Kurt Carnahan on an 8-yard scamper.

Union’s lone run came on a 4-yard run by Brian Lipps.

MONITEAU RALLIES FOR WIN OVER A-C VALLEY

FOXBURG – Moniteau scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the game to defeat A-C Valley 22-14 in the season and KSAC opener for both teams Friday night at A-C Valley.

The Falcons had a 14-0 lead late in the game before the Warriors responded with three unanswered touchdowns to win the game.

A-C Valley had a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to a 5-yard run by Matt Knight and a 43-yard scamper by Brad Hurrelbrink.

Moniteau finally got on the scoreboard with 4:59 left to play when Bill Staab scored from 17 yards out to cut the A-C Valley lead to 14-8.

The Warriors then recovered an on-side kick, and Staab scored from two yards out to tie the game at 14. Heath Schreffler then caught the two-point conversion pass from Scott Weist to give the Warriors a 16-14 lead.

Staab tacked on some insurance for Moniteau with a 64-yard run.

Staab led the Moniteau rushing attack with 33 carries for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Pat Rumbaugh was 2-for-6 for 59 yards.

Mike Stewart led A-C Valley going 3-for-13 passing for 28 yards and tacking on six rushes for 66 yards.

Moniteau outgained A-C Valley 316 yards to 202 yards including the Warriors 257 yards on the ground to the Falcons 141 yards.

REDBANK VALLEY SURVIVES SCARE FROM WEST SHAMOKIN

RURAL VALLEY – West Shamokin, who went 0-10 a year ago, came within a heartbeat of beating Redbank Valley to start the 2001 season, but the Bulldogs rallied from a 14-0 deficit to get a 23-20 win in the season and KSAC opener for both teams Friday night at West Shamokin.

West Shamokin took the early 14-0 lead on a 7-yard run by Bill Fulton and a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jon Nagy.

Redbank Valley answered right back with 23 straight points.

Ron Geist got the Bulldogs back in the game with a 1-yard touchdown run, and then Chris Merwin found Tyson Truitt for a 38-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14.

Then with only six seconds left in the opening half, Brady Evans hit a 23-yard field goal to give Redbank Valley a 17-14 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third quarter when Merwin scored from three yards out to give Redbank Valley a 23-14 lead.

West Shamokin came back to make the score 23-20 on a 9-yard run by Trevor Henderson.

Merwin led Redbank Valley’s offense going 9-for-19 for 104 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for a score.

Geist led the Bulldogs ground game rushing the ball 27 times for 134 yards and one touchdown.

Geist led the Bulldog defense with nine tackles, while Tyson Truitt had eight tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception.
