BROOKVILLE UPSETS MONITEAU IN OPENING ROUND OF DISTRICT 9 CLASS AA PLAYOFFS

NOV. 5, 2004 - District 9 Class AA Playoffs First Round

WEST SUNBURY – Brookville outgained Moniteau 306-139 and the Raiders defense didn’t allow a touchdown on its way to an upset win, 20-13, over the Warriors in the opening round of the District 9 Class AA playoffs Friday night at Moniteau.

The win avenged a 52-20 Week One loss by the Raiders (4-6) at Moniteau (5-5), although in that game Brookville was without some key players due to disciplinary reasons. The game also marks the first postseason win for Brookville since 1999. The Raiders lost home first-round games in each of the last two seasons to Brockway and Karns City respectively.

Nick Heschke’s 83-yard scoring run with 8:16 left in the third quarter broke a 13-13 tie and proved to be the difference.

The game was tied at seven at the end of the first quarter and at 13 at halftime.

A 6-yard Travis Diener run 4:53 into the game gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead, but Moniteau answered back 15 seconds later when Eric Hilliard returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown.

Moniteau then went ahead 13-7 when Josh Warburton picked off a Heschke pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown with 7:57 left in the first half.

Brookville tied the game just 32 seconds before halftime on a 1-yard Diener run.

Heschke led Brookville with nine carries for 120 yards while going 2-for-9 passing for 44 yards and two interceptions. Silas Wonderling added 23 carries for 98 yards with Brookville outgaining Moniteau 262-105 on the ground.

Moniteau, which ended Clarion-Limestone’s 34-game regular-season win streak last week, ran just 44 plays on offense to 60 for Brookville. Matt Schandelmeier led the Warriors with 18 carries for 65 yards, but quarterback Garth Kohlmeyer was just 1-for-9 passing for 34 yards and two interceptions.

Brookville will now face Brockway (8-1), who had an opening round bye, in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Brockway.
