BROOKVILLE'S DREAM ENDS AT HANDS OF GROVE CITY

NOV. 26, 2004 - PIAA Class AA First Round

SLIPPERY ROCK – The Brookville Raiders Revenge Tour 2004 made its final stop Friday night at Slippery Rock’s N. Kerr Stadium, compliments of District 10 champion Grove City.

The Eagles (10-2) jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and held off a second-half Raiders rally to notch a 28-12 win in the PIAA Class AA playoffs. The District 9 champion Raiders finished the year at 6-7.

Unlike past Raiders playoff opponents Moniteau and Redbank Valley, Grove City didn’t let the Raiders avenge an earlier loss to the Eagles. Grove City beat Brookville, 28-0, in both teams’ regular-season finale.

After fumbling the ball away in its first possession, Grove City scored on its next three to take control of the game.

Quarterback Jim Jaskowak tossed a 64-yard TD pass to Jessie Alfreno to start the game’s scoring. Jaskowak made it 14-0 with a 36-yard run with 9:53 left in the first half. Then Dan Sonntag scored on a 15-yard run with 2:41 left in the half to make it 21-0.

But Brookville rallied with two early fourth-quarter scores. Both were set up by poor Grove City special teams play.

A bad snap forced a short 18-yard punt to the Eagles’ 42. The Raiders used eight plays to score, finishing it off on Nick Heschke’s 6-yard pass to Matt Mohney just nine seconds into the fourth quarter.

Another bad snap this time did not lead to a punt, instead a 22-yard loss to the Raiders’ 16. Two plays later, Silas Wonderling scored on a 1-yard run with 8:52 remaining. A failed two-point conversion pass got the Raiders to within 21-12.

But Grove City responded and scored on Sonntag’s 25-yard run with 5:15 left to set the final score.

Grove City outgained Brookville, 355-182. Jack Vallely led the Eagles with 114 yards rushing. Jaskowak completed 6 of 8 passes for 127 yards.

For Brookville, quarterback Heschke completed 9 of 20 passes for 100 yards with two interceptions. He also led the team with 31 yards rushing.
