GRUMLEY LEADS JOHNSONBURG PAST RIDGWAY IN 100th ALL-TIME MEETING BETWEEN ELK COUNTY RIVALS

Sept. 11, 2004

RIDGWAY – Led by an outstanding effort by sophomore Calvin Grumley, Johnsonburg scored 13 unanswered second-half points to gain a come-from-behind 20-12 win over Ridgway in the 100th meeting between the Elk County schools Saturday night at Ridgway.

The win helped Johnsonburg (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML South) climb closer in the all-time series with the Elkers (0-2, 0-2). Ridgway now leads the series 48-44-8.

The victory also snapped a 3-game losing streak against the Elkers for the Rams, who have won just three of the last 13 meetings between the rivals dating back to 1992.

If Grumley, who was better known for his prowess on the basketball court than the football field until Saturday night, has anything to do about it the series might soon switch to Johnsonburg.

The sophomore running back scored three touchdowns in three different ways.

He ran for a touchdown, returned a punt for a score and caught a touchdown pass.

Overall, he rushed 34 times for 192 yards, caught one pass for eight yards and had 298 all-purpose yards.

Grumley started the scoring with an 88-yard punt return that gave Johnsonburg a 7-0 lead with 8:26 left in the first quarter.

But Ridgway controlled the rest of the scoring in the first half taking a 12-7 halftime lead.

A 33-yard run by Beau Iorfido, who ran 16 times for 135 yards on the night, got the Elkers to within a point at 7-6 with 1:38 left in the first quarter.

Then with 10 seconds left in the first half, Kyle Huber scored on a 4-yard run to give the Elkers a 12-7 lead.

That lead lasted until the 4:50 mark of the third quarter when an 11-yard run by Grumley lifted Johnsonburg into the lead for good at 13-12.

An 8-yard pass from Jesse Dennis, starting in place of the injured Anthony Imbrogno, to Grumley with 9:01 remaining in the game gave Johnsonburg some breathing room.

The two teams were close statistic-wise with Johnsonburg outgaining Ridgway 244-224 including 236-181 on the ground.

Josh Feronti added 11 carries for 45 yards for Johnsonburg, while Zack Pontious picked up 24 yards on six carries for Ridgway. Hubber was 6-for-12 passing for 43 yards for the Elkers.

The game was fairly well played with only one fumble between the teams and only four penalties.
