BRADFORD 28, PUNXSUTAWNEY 0

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Bradford didn’t let a little (OK a lot) of rain slow it down Friday night knocking off D9 League rival Punxsutawney 28-0 on the road.

Punxsutawney played without its leading rusher and one if its top players sophomore Devin Mesoraco, who was out with a shoulder injury. Going into the game, Mesoraco had accounted for 213 of Punxsutawney’s 458 yards on the season or 46.5 percent.

Without him, the Chucks were not able to get any offense going getting just five first downs and even failing to score early in the game after recovering a Bradford fumble at the Owls 5-yard line.

On the other hand, Bradford’s offense took advantage of good field position three times and bad field position once to score 28 points.

The first two Owls touchdowns came following Punxsutawney fumbles that were recovered by Bradford at the Chucks 18-yard line.

Nate Westlake scored the first touchdown on a 4-yard run with 1:31 left in the first quarter, and Dave Snyder got a 1-yard scoring run 15 seconds into the second quarter to give Bradford a 14-0 lead.

A 28-yard punt return by Westlake late in the first half set the Owls up at the Punxsy 12-yard line, and Mike Austin hit Shawn Spindler with a 12-yard scoring pass to make it 20-0 Bradford at the half.

After the three short first-half drives, Bradford used a school-record 99-yard drive in the third quarter to put the Chucks away.

The drive started after Westlake intercepted a pass at the Bradford 1-yard line spoiling an apparent Punxsutawney break when the Owls failed to cover the second-half kickoff with Punxsy recovering the free ball at the Bradford 21.

After the interception, the Owls used 12 plays and six minutes to go the 99 yards scoring on a 1-yard run by Snyder.
