BROCKWAY – Mike Vervoort caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Derek Buganza and Dan Golemboski added the crucial extra point as Brockway rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes to beat Smethport 22-21 Friday night at Brockway.

The Hubbers led 21-8 following Preston Birtcil’s 96-yard touchdown run with 7:38 left. But Buganza found Vervoort with an 8-yard scoring toss with 4:52 left to start the comeback.

Smethport led 15-0 at halftime thanks to a 21-yard Kyle Nobles run and a pass from Jarod Hughes to Dave Cooney.

Brockway cut the lead to 15-8 on an 8-yard scoring toss from Buganza to Jake Shaffer 39 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Birtcil rushed 22 times for 221 yards and a touchdown while also intercepting a pass for Smethport, while Nobles rushed 11 times for 61 yards and a score.

Buganza directed Brockway’s spread, no-huddle offense – yes the spread, no-huddle offense – going 25-for-38 for 251 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Seth Galluzzi added a 4-for-4 performance for 44 yards meaning the Rovers were 29 of 42 passing for 295 yards and three scores. Compare that to the 2000 Brockway that for the season was 13 of 54 for 258 yards and two touchdowns.

Shaffer caught 12 catches, 131 yards and a touchdown, while Vervoort added 12 added catches for 90 yards.
