DuBOIS – In a game dominated by offense, it was the Dubois defense that had the last laugh using a goal-line stand to hold off Clearfield for a 35-28 win in the season opener for both teams Friday night at DuBois’ E.J. Mansell Stadium.

The Bisons had the ball at the DuBois 1-yard line with 1:13 remaining after driving from their own 12 with just over three minutes to play. But the Beaver defense held stopping Clearfield quarterback Jarrin Campman on four straight quarterback sneaks the last coming as time expired.

“It came down to guts and conditioning,” said Dubois coach Jason Shilala. “I think at that point in the game we had just a little bit more left in the tank then they did. For a rivalry of 102 games to come down to that, it doesn't get much better.”

While the Beaver defense stole the show in the game’s final moments, they were not to be outdone by the play of senior running back Garrett Malmgren. The Beaver standout rushed 15 times for 300 yards, an eye-popping average of 20 yards per carry, and four touchdowns.

“Not bad,” Shilala said. “He’s probably the fastest guy on the field most nights, and I think he proved that tonight.”

DuBois broke a 14-all halftime tie by outscoring Clearfield 21-7 in the third to go to final 12 minutes up 35-21.

But Clearfield got back into the game on a 5-yard Josh Rippey run with 6:30 left in the contest. Cruise Kerr set up that score when he recovered a Beaver fumble with just over eight minutes left. The Bisons were helped by a roughing-the-passer penalty on fourth down that kept the drive alive.

“I have to Clearfield a lot of credit,” Shilala said. “Coach (Tim) Janocko been at this for a long time. They are a very well coach team.”

DuBois looked like it was going to put the game away when Malmgren broke free for a 55-yard to the Clearfield 39 with around five minutes to play. But the Bisons defense stiffened forcing a punt that was downed at the 12-yard line setting up the late drive.

Clearfield then drove the ball to the DuBois 1-yard thanks in part to a 21-yard run by Jarrin Campman.

After a tightly played first half that resulted in the 14-all tie, Clearfield took the initial advantage in the second half on a 1-yard touchdown by Campman.

But DuBois answered with three touchdowns before the third quarter ended.

Malmgren scored on a run of seven and 90 yards, and Les Miller scored on a 37-yard run with 53 seconds left in the quarter to give the Beavers the 35-21 lead.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first two quarters with Isiah Morgan scoring on a 2-yard run for Clearfield in the opening 12 minutes and Malmgren reaching the end zone on a 52-yard run.

Malmgren’s 23-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter put DuBois ahead 14-7, but a 3-yard scoring by Campman tied the game at 14 with 1:43 left in the half.

Campman had a great in a losing effort for Clearfield. He finished the night 24 of 40 passing for 294 yards including 11 passes for 116 yards to his brother Trey. Jarrin Campman also ran for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Both teams are back in action next week with DuBois traveling to Punxsutawney and Clearfield traveling to Philipsburg-Osceola.

NOTES:  Dubois captured the first ever "First Media Radio/Dan's Pro Shop King of the Mountain Trophy”.  The Trophy will be awarded to the winner each season of the Dubois/Clearfield game, and that school, Dubois in this case, will get to keep the trophy until next year's game … DuBois now leads the overall series with Clearfield 68-29-5, although Clearfield has still won four of the last six meetings.
