KNOX – Keystone’s defense rose from the ashes when it mattered the most stopping Clarion-Limestone’s Dan Miller short of the end zone on a two-point conversion try in the second overtime to give the Panthers a 40-38 victory over the visiting Lions Friday night.

The stop came moments after Miller had scored on a 3-yard run to bring the Lions to within two points. Keystone had taken a 40-32 lead in the second overtime on a 14-yard Dan Reed to Ben Black pass, and a Reed 2-point conversion pass to B.J. Seyler.

Keystone trailed 26-12 entering the fourth quarter but staged its second fourth-quarter comeback of the year when Reed hit Brett Zuck with a 4-yard scoring pass early in the quarter and then found Seyler with a 23-yard touchdown toss with 7:03 left in regulation. Reed then tied the game when he hit Black with the two-point conversion toss.

C-L had the ball first in overtime, and Zac Kemmer caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Miller putting the Lions ahead again at 32-25 after the failed two-point conversion pass.

Keystone had the answer in the form of a 7-yard Reed to Brett Zuck scoring pass. The Panthers tried the game-winning extra point but it was no good.

Prior to Keystone’s defensive stop in the second overtime, the Panthers defense had been shredded for 433 yards on the night including 307 on the ground from a team that had rushed for 165 total combined yards in the first six games. Zac Roller had a monster game for the Lions rushing 35 times for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Roller’s two scores, which came just over four minutes apart in the third quarter, gave C-L the 26-12 lead after the Lions had led 14-12 at halftime.

Keystone struck first on a 59-yard run by Zach Smith in the first quarter, but two scoring runs – 10 and 2 yards – by Miller in the second quarter but the Lions ahead 14-6. Reed, who threw five touchdown passes while going 13 of 36 for 130 yards and two picks, found Black, who had five catches for 50 yards, with an 8-yard scoring toss 35 seconds before the half expired.

Miller was 10 of 24 passing for 126 yards and the touchdown while also throwing two picks and running 17 times for 41 yards. Kemmer had four catches for 70 yards.

Smith ran four times for 83 yards, while Reed added 13 carries for 81 yards. Zuck had four catches for 42 yards and Seyler four for 38 while adding an interception on defense.

NOTES – It was the second overtime win this season for Keystone, which beat Union 36-30 three weeks ago at Keystone … C-L, which lost on the final play of the game at Punxsutawney last week, so its three-game overtime win streak come to an end. The Lions last lost an overtime game Sept. 3, 1999, when St. Marys beat them 33-27 in double overtime … It was the second double overtime game between Keystone and C-L. The Lions prevailed 28-21 Sept. 21, 2001, at C-L … The victory puts Keystone in control of its own destiny in the District 9 Class A playoff race. With three games remaining, the Panthers hold a one-game lead in the loss column over Ridgway and Port Allegany. Both of those schools only have two games left.
