– There was no stopping Cameron County’s rushing attack Friday night as the Red Raiders ran for 600 yards in a
57-22 victory over eight-seeded Keystone in the opening round of the District 9 Class A Playoffs. Andy
Lippert set the tone with 290 yards and four touchdowns while Randy Schatz added 163 yards. Cameron
County found itself trailing 8-0 after the first play of the game. Keystone scored on a 76-yard gadget play when
wide receiver Ben Black took the hand-off on a reverse and he found quarterback Dan Reed open down the field for
the touchdown. From
that point, though, it was all Red Raider football. Cameron County scored 22 points in the first quarter and it
took a 36-8 lead into halftime. The
Red Raiders scored on their first five possessions of the game while Keystone’s offense stalled. The Panthers
punted five times in the first half. Cameron County didn’t punt the entire game. Credit
a solid defensive effort from Cameron County, who was getting pressure on Keystone quarterback Dan Reed. Reed
completed only 3 of 10 passes for nine yards in the first half. “I’m
real pleased with the kids and I thought they did a good job,” Cameron County head coach Tony Defilippi said.
“All the backs ran well. We wanted out offense to manage the game and that’s what they did.” Cameron
County tied things up on a 3-yard touchdown run by Andrew Kesterholt and Hunter Bardo gave the Red Raiders a 15-8
advantage with 6:42 left in the first quarter. Lippert
put the Red Raiders ahead 22-8 with a 1-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
Lippert also had touchdown runs of 42, 12 and 93 in the contest. “Andy
has had two good games in a row now,” Defilippi said. “We’ve got healthier on the offensive line in the last
two weeks and it is starting to gel.” Jarek
Holjencin’s 16-yard touchdown reception put the Red Raiders up 29-8 in the second quarter. Quarterback Jason
Blose finished 3 of 5 for 39 yards and one touchdown and he also added a touchdown run from three yards out in the
fourth. Keystone
recovered a Red Raider fumble on their first drive in the second half. The Panthers scored following the turnover
when Reed kept it on the option to make it 36-16 with 8:45 left in the third. The
Red Raiders answered back with the next three touchdowns to go up 57-16. The Panthers closed out the scoring with a
touchdown on their final drive. Reed completed all four pass attempts on the drive. Black caught three for 36 yards
before Brett Zuck hauled in a 28-yard reception for the touchdown with 5:36 left to play. “I
thought we played pretty well defensively,” Defilippi said. “That’s a hard offense to defend. They have some
real good receivers and a quarterback that gets the out of his hands quickly.” Reed
was 10 of 24 for 110 yards with one touchdown. Black finished with six grabs for 69 yards. The
Red Raiders finished 642 yards of total offense to Keystone’s 197. CAMERON
