KARNS CITY – It was nearly the same story the second time around for the Moniteau Warriors, who moved to within one win of their first District 9 title after routing Brookville, 55-7, in the District 9 Class AA semifinals Friday night.

Moniteau amassed 416 yards of offense and led 42-7 at intermission before finishing with 543 yards as the entire second half was played with the PIAA Mercy Rule’s running clock.

In Moniteau’s first win over Brookville this year, a 42-7 win at home on Oct. 10, the Warriors piled up 540 yards of offense and led 28-7 at halftime.

The repeat performance puts the Warriors into next week’s championship game for the second straight year against Karns City, a team Moniteau beat 35-34 during the regular season.

Warriors junior running back James Shope ran wild and gave Brookville would-be tacklers fits all night. He rushed for 229 yards on just 10 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 4 and 51 yards. He also had big gainers on runs of 55 and 69 yards.

Quarterback Tyler Armagost completed 10 of 17 passes for 198 yards and threw touchdown passes of 37 yards to Dakota Campbell and 20 yards to Tony Campbell.

Moniteau scored on its first four possessions and led 28-0 after one quarter. The Raiders scored their only touchdown on Kyle Galbraith’s 36-yard run eight seconds into the second quarter. Galbraith also scored the Raiders’ only touchdown in their first game against Moniteau on a 90-yard kickoff return.

Shope’s 4- and 51-yard TD runs came in the final 4:44 of the first half as the Warriors secured a 35-point lead to start the running clock in the second half.

In a fast-moving second half, the Warriors scored once in each quarter on Armagost’s 20-yard pass to Tony Campbell and Ricky Best’s 2-yard run.

The Raiders, who finished 5-6, gained just 18 yards on 14 offensive plays in the second half. Still, their 148 yards of offense was better than their 67 the first time around.

The 48-point loss was Brookville’s worst since a 54-0 loss to Union in 1959.
