COUDERSPORT – Fourth-seeded Coudersport raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead on its way to a 31-8 victory over fifth-seeded Johnsonburg in the opening round of the District 9 Class A playoffs Saturday night in Coudersport.

Four different Falcons scored, and the Coudersport defense didn’t allow a Johnsonburg touchdown – the Rams lone score came on a 92-yard Zane Zelehoski kickoff return in the fourth quarter with the Falcons (8-2) leading 31-0.

Coudersport, which had only 213 yards of offense, a 17-point second quarter to take the big halftime lead.

A 34-yard Eric Babcock to Ty Carts pass in the first quarter staked the Falcons to a 7-0 lead before a 37-yard Tim Thomas run in the second quarter made it 14-0. Cooper Bonczar then hit a 27-yard field goal, and Brett Whitman returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-0 at the break.

The score remained that way until the fourth quarter when Babcock hit Nate Minor with an 8-yard scoring pass.

Babcock finished the game 4 of 10 for 52 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Minor had two grabs for 25 yards, while Thomas ran 13 times for 88 yards while also picking off two passes on defense. 

Coudersport will now face Cameron County in the semifinals Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be determined. Cameron beat Coudy 13-7 in the regular season
