GIBSONIA – Aliquippa didn’t have a letdown after winning the WPIAL Class AA title last week, and as a result Karns City didn’t have a chance falling to the Quips 42-14 in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals Friday night at Pine-Richland High School.

Aliquippa led 42-7 at halftime and outgained Karns City 354-13 in the half. The Quips scored touchdowns on each of their first five drives.

“We thought we could hang with them, but they hit a couple of big plays and stunned us,” Karns City head coach Ed Conto told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “And after that, they just blew us off the ball.”

Karns City (12-2), the District 9 champion, didn’t help its cause in the first half turning the ball over three times including a pair of Anthony Stimac interceptions. Those three turnovers led to three Aliquippa touchdowns.

That was more than enough for the Quips (12-2), who entered the WPIAL playoffs as the seventh seed but have strung together 10 straight victories.

The three-some of Maurice Carter, Rasheem Jones and Rasha Kenney was too much for Karns City.

Carter ran for 123 yards and a touchdown, Jones 3 of 5 passing for 154 yards and two scores and Kenney had two catches, both for touchdowns, for 121 yards.

The Quips, who won the Class AA state title in 2003, advanced to the semifinals where they will Wilmington (11-1), the champion of District 10. Wilmington defeated Central, 21-19, last night at Slippery Rock University.

"We're in the semifinal, and there are no dogs left," Zmijanac said. "You're going to play a great team, no matter whom you play."

Running back Maurice Carter ran for 132 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Rasheem Jones threw for 153 and two scores, and wideout Rashad Kenney made two catches for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Quips.

The Quips led by four touchdowns before Karns City had run its sixth play on offense.

“They tackled better than we did, hit harder than we did, blocked harder than we did, and they played a complete game,” Conto told the Tribune-Review. “Whether we just didn’t show up, or they are that much better, I just don’t know.”

Karns City’s first touchdown came on a 12-yard screen pass from Stimac to Markus LaVan after a bad punt snap gave the Gremlins the ball at the Aliquippa 18-yard line midway through the second quarter.

The Gremlins then scored again in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard Stimac to Josh Callender scoring pass.

Stimac finished the night with 66 yards rushing and was 3 of 9 passing for 47 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark (1,029) but came up short in his bid become the second player in District 9 history, and the second this season, to get 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards passing. He finished the year with 967 passing yards.

Aliquippa will now play Wilmington, a 21-19 winner over Central-Martinsburg, in the PIAA semifinals next weekend at a site, time and date to be determined.
