JOHNSONBURG 40, SHEFFIELD 8

SHEFFIELD – Ren Yonker threw three touchdown passes, ran for a fourth and returned a punt for a fifth to lead Johnsonburg to a 40-8 win at Sheffield Saturday afternoon.

Craig Carrow caught two of the scoring passes from Yonker, who was 7 of 12 passing for 151 yards while also running five times for 96 yards including a 93-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Yonker’s punt return went for 81 yards in the third quarter.

Carrow finished the day with five catches for 127 yards.

Sheffield’s lone score came on a 1-yard pass from Craig Fitch to Tim Fry in the fourth quarter. Fitch finished 9 of 22 for 112 yards with Jimmy Hahn catching six of the aerials for 87 yards.

The Rams are 2-0 for the second time in three years, while Sheffield dropped its sixth straight game and has now lossed 29 of its past 31 games.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 15, PORT ALLEGANY 0

PORT ALLEGANY – Elk County Catholic recorded its first shutout since the first game of last season with a 15-0 win at Port Allegany Saturday afternoon.

“The defense played a great game getting the shutout,” ECC first-year head coach Travis Skrzypek said.

Kyle Gerber and Josh Catalano each scored rushing touchdowns for the Crusaders (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML-South) with Gerber rushing for 90 yards and Catalano for 41.  

KARNS CITY 62, UNION 13

KARNS CITY – Josh Callender scored four touchdowns including returning two punts for scores to lead Karns City to a 62-13 win over visiting Union in KSAC action Friday night.

The Gremlins (2-0 overall, 2-0 KSAC) led 49-0 at halftime thanks to a 28-point second quarter, the second time in two weeks a team has put up 28 points in a quarter on Union (0-2, 0-2).

Karns City outgained Union 30-7-181 including 247 to 43 on the ground, but it was long returns that hurt the Golden Knights the most.

Callender returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and then a punt 52 yards for a score in the second quarter. In between, Josh Stimac had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown, and then in the third quarter Matt Bauldoff returned a fumble 55 yards for a score. Callender also scored on a 14-yard pass from Anthony Stimac, who was 3 of 10 for 60 yards with all three completions going for scores, and on a 17-yard strike from Stimac.

Matt Gagliano threw two second-half touchdown passes for Union finding Colby Davis with a 5-yard pass in the third quarter and Zach Traister with a 47-yard strike in the fourth quarter.   

Markus LaVan paced Karns City with 60 yards and a touchdown on six carries, while Callender had the two catches for 31 yards and two scores.

Gagliano was 13 of 24 passing for 138 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Traister caught six passes for 120 yards and the touchdown, while Davis had 26 yards rushing and nine receiving with the score.

COUDERSPORT 55, BROCKWAY 20

BROCKWAY – Coudersport got multiple touchdowns from three different players while racking up 511 yards of total offense in a 55-20 shootout win at Brockway Friday night.

The Falcons (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML-North) got three touchdowns from Tim Thomas and two apiece from Nate Minor and Zach Buckler while rolling past the Rovers.

Coudersport ran for over 350 including 164 on 22 carries from Thomas and 121 on nine from Buckler. Thomas added two catches for 19 yards.

Eric Babcock also completed 7 of 11 passes for 117 yards and two scores while running for 28 yards on three carries for Coudy, which led 35-13 at halftime. Babcock also added an interception on defense. Minor had three catches for 71 yards and the two scores.

Last week’s RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com Co-Player of the Week Derek Buganza was 19 of 35 passing for 250 yards and a touchdown for Brockway (1-1, 1-1 AML-South) Buganza has ran four times for 24 yards. Eight different Rovers caught passes led by five for 65 yards by Mike Vervoort and four for 46 by Mark Shannon, who missed last week’s game with an injury.

Coudersport won despite not having the services of Dirk Cowburn, the leading rusher in Week One for the Falcons. Cowburn missed the game with an injury and could be out a few more games including next week’s showdown with unbeaten Curwensville.  

CAMERON COUNTY 35, RIDGWAY 0

RIDGWAY – Jason Blose threw a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to help Cameron County break a scoreless tie after one quarter on its way to a 35-0 win at Ridgway Friday night.

Blose connected on a 15-yard scoring pass to Mike Malizia and a 42-yard toss to Andy Beer, as the Red Raiders took a 14-0 halftime lead.

The score remained 14-0 until the next-to-the-last play of the third quarter when Daniel Sullivan recovered a fumble in the end zone with one second left in the quarter to move the advantage to 21-0. Cameron then tacked on two more fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Blose was just 3 of 6 for 78 yards but did throw the two touchdowns, and he added 10 carries for a team-high 71 yards. Andrew Kesterholt added 13 totes for 65 yards, as nine different Red Raiders carried the football for a total of 259 rushing yards.

Ridgway, meanwhile, coming off a 51-0 thrashing of Sheffield a week ago, managed just four first downs and 108 total yards of offense including 74 yards rushing on 30 carries. Elliot Pontious led the way with 18 carries for 86 yards.

CLEARFIELD 35, PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA 0

PHILIPSBURG – Jarrin Campman threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead Clearfield to a 35-0 win at Philipsburg-Osceola Friday.

Campman was 9 of 13 passing for 166 yards including a 61-yard scoring toss to Brandon Sass and an 18-yard strike to his younger brother Trey, who had six catches for 78 yards. Jarrin Campman also ran 11 times for 56 yards including a 12-yard scoring run on the last play of the first quarter that gave the Bisons a 7-0 lead.

Isiah Morgan added a 4-yard scoring run for the Bisons (1-1 overall, 1-0 MAC – Nittany), and Brady Dixon returned a fumble three yards for the final score of the night.

Philipsburg falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the MAC-Nittany.

REDBANK VALLEY 49, KEYSTONE 0

NEW BETHLEHEM – Redbank Valley made an early play for one of the two automatic District 9 Class A playoff berths that go to the KSAC with a 49-0 whipping of visiting Keystone Friday night.

Alex Bladel ran 20 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns and had seven tackles and a sack on defense to pace the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-0 overall and in the KSAC on the season while downing one of their chief rivals for the D9 playoff spot the last two seasons. It was Redbank Valley’s eighth straight win over Keystone and the Bulldogs 18th victory in the last 20 tries against the Panthers.

Quarterback Shiloh Buchleitner added 79 yards rushing and two touchdowns and was 7 of 10 passing for 133 yards and a score for Redbank Valley, whose first-year head coach Brandon Rapp was a Panther assistant the last two years and is also a graduate of the Knox-based school.

Kasey Haines added three catches for 56 yards.  

For the second straight week, Redbank Valley put the Mercy Rule into effect early grabbing a 35-0 halftime lead.

Keystone falls to 1-1 overall and in the KSAC.

CURWENSVILLE 48, OTTO-ELDRED 12

CURWENSVILLE – David Kalgren threw four touchdowns passes and returned an interception for a fifth touchdown to help Curwensville breeze past Otto-Eldred 48-12 Friday night in Curwensville.

Otto-Eldred (0-2 overall, 0-2 AML-North) led 6-0 following a 6-yard scoring run by Drew Coscia early in the first quarter, but Curwensville (2-0, 2-0 AML-South) scored the next 48 points.

Kalgren was a big part of that, as the senior quarterback was nearly perfect going 10-for-11 passing for 163 yards and the four touchdowns while adding three carries for 20 yards. He also returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter giving Curwensville the lead.

Jesse Hoover (4 catches, 78 yards) was on the receiving end of two of Kalgren’s touchdown passes, while Sam Gardner and Derek Dixon also got scoring tosses with Gardner’s coming on a 43-yard pass with just seven seconds left in the first half.

Nick Opaliski and Ben McGary also scored touchdowns rushing for Curwensville, which got 68 yards on the ground from McGary and 63 from Jed Greslick.

Mark Beckwith had Otto’s other touchdown on a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter. Shawn Barnish was 8 of 16 passing for 126 yards for the Terrors, while Justin Bird rushed eight times for 49 yards,

DUBOIS 42, PUNXSUTAWNEY 6

PUNXSUTAWNEY – DuBois broke open a close game at halftime with 28 straight second-half points on its way to a 42-6 win at Punxsutawney Friday night.

The Beavers (2-0) led their former D9 League rival 14-0 at the break but Garrett Malmgren, last week’s RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com Co-Player of the Week, returned to opening kickoff of the second half 85 yards for a touchdown making it 21-0.

Later in the third quarter, Josh Means picked off a pass and returned it 53 yards for a score and a 28-0 lead. The Beavers tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter before Punxsy’s Glenn Perry scored on a 62-yard run with just five seconds to play.  

Kyle Bish led DuBois with 83 yards rushing on seven carries and added three catches for 69 yards, while Malmgren, who had 300 yards last week, was limited to 40 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Danny Henry was 4 of 11 passing for 81 yards and an interception and also had a 1-yard touchdown run.

Ben Blazavich ran 15 times for 37 yards for Punxsy (0-2) and was 4 of 7 passing for 57 yards and an interception. Logan Weaver was 5 of 12 passing for 73 yards and two picks for the Chucks, and Easton Weaver had four catches for 111 yards.

ST. MARYS 36, LEWISTOWN 0

LEWISTOWN – St. Marys bounced back from a heart-breaking opening week loss to Bellefonte by knocking off homestanding Lewistown 36-0 Friday night.

Kevin Hoy scored three first-half touchdowns while helping the Dutch (1-1) jump out to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Hoy, who scored on runs of 5, 7 and 26 yards, ran 12 times for 97 yards. Mitchell Straub led St. Marys with eight carries for 117 yards and a 51-yard touchdown run, while Shane Krise added seven carries for 72 yards and a touchdown. St. Marys ran 34 times for 308 yards on the night. Straub added a catch for 14 yards, while Krise had two grabs for 13 yards.    

Connor Muir paced Lewistown (0-2), which has been outscored 91-7 in its two games, with 13 carries for 78 yards. He was also 16 of 26 passing for 118 yards.  

BRADFORD 23, OLEAN (NY) 14

BRADFORD – Bradford built a 23-2 fourth-quarter lead before holding off archrival Olean (NY) for a 23-14 win Friday night in the first official game on the new turf at Parkway Field in Bradford.

The Owls, who led 10-2 at halftime, got touchdown runs from Pat Pascarella (37 yards) and Mike Pascarella (1 yard) to take the 23-2 lead with just 8:31 left to play.

But Olean, which hasn’t beaten Bradford since 2005, answered with a 72-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Stevens to Ryan Carney to make it 23-8 with 7:29 to play.

The Owls then fumbled the kickoff with Olean recovering at the Bradford 20. It took three plays for the Huskies to score on a 20-yard pass from Stevens to Carney and the score was 23-14.

Bradford then handed the ball right back to Olean with another fumble on the kick return, but the Owls defense tightened and held on downs at the Olean 48. Bradford then ran out the clock for the win.

Cody Nuzzo kicked a 31-yard field goal and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Grandy to pace Bradford. Steven Reinhart also had a big interception for the Owls at the Olean 6-yard line setting up the Nuzzo touchdown catch.

Pat Pascarella led the way with eight carries for 81 yards, while Mark Havers had 12 carries for 55 yards and Mike Pascarella 13 for 50 yards for the Owls. 

Bradford (1-1) now leads the all-time series with Olean (0-1) 61-43-7. It was the 111th meeting between the cross-border schools.
