PORT ALLEGANY 20, SMETHPORT 6

PORT ALLEGANY – Seth Lowery ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third to lead Port Allegany to a come-from-behind 20-6 win over visiting Smethport Saturday afternoon.

The winless Hubbers (0-5 overall, 0-5 AML North) led 6-0 at halftime only to see Port Allegany (1-4, 1-4) take a 13-7 lead at the end of the third quarter thanks to a 3-yard Lowery run and a 56-yard pass from Lowery to Bryce Healy. Lowery then tacked on a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 15 carries for 123 yards while going 2-for-2 passing for 59 yards. He also recorded four tackles on defense.

Healy had three catches for 77 yards and had six tackles, while Ryan Bodamer recorded 13 tackles.  

MONITEAU 42, UNION 12

RIMERSBURG – Trailing winless Union 12-7 at halftime, visiting Moniteau exploded for 35 unanswered second-half points to get a 42-12 win Friday night and remain unbeaten.

Union (0-5 overall, 0-5 KSAC) took the halftime lead on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Matt Gagliano to Kurtis Shirey with just 11 seconds left in the half. It was Gagliano’s second scoring strike of the second quarter after he hit Colby Davis with a 30-yard pass in the quarter’s opening minute.

But Victory Santoyo’s 53-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the third quarter gave Moniteau (5-0, 5-0) its first lead of the game, and Dakota Campbell followed with a 1-yard touchdown run less than a minute latter to get the Warrior ball rolling.  

Tony Campbell then caught a pair of scoring passes from Tyler Armagost in the fourth quarter sandwiched inbetween an 11-yard touchdown run by James Shope.

Armagost was 10 of 20 passing for 166 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while running 14 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Tony Campbell had six grabs for 90 yards and the score.

Gagliano was 8 of 19 passing for 194 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while also rushing four times for 58 yards and catching one pass for 31 yards. Davis had four grabs for 101 yards and the touchdown but was limited to minus-4 yards rushing on nine carries.  

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 13, KANE 12, OT

ST. MARYS – Josh Catalano’s extra point in overtime following Ricky Pearsall’s 10-yard touchdown run gave Elk County Catholic a 13-12 upset win over visiting Kane Friday night.

The game was tied at six at the end of regulation before Kane took a 12-6 lead on its possession of overtime on a 10-yard Kenny Kane touchdown run. The extra point, however, was missed.

ECC then got the ball, and Pearsall tied the game on his second rushing touchdown of the game before Catalano, who had booted a game-winning field goal in overtime two weeks ago, nailed the extra point.

The Crusaders (4-1 overall, 4-1 AML South), who won their first game against a team with a win this year, led 6-0 at halftime thanks to Pearsall’s 4-yard touchdown run 30 seconds before halftime.

The score remained 6-0 until early in the fourth quarter when Kenny Kane hit Bert Leonard with a 21-yard touchdown pass.   

Pearsall ran 29 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns and also intercepted a pass on defense while recording six tackles to lead ECC, while Eric Higgins recovered two fumbles including one that setup Pearsall’s first touchdowns and had five tackles. It was the second week in a row that Higgins had two fumble recoveries.

Kenny Kane was 6 of 13 passing for 104 yards, a touchdown and an interception with Ross Nicholson catching two passes for 39 yards and also rushing 11 times for 36 yards. But Kane’s offense managed just 197 yards for the game and seven first downs while turning the ball over three times.  

It was the second time this season Kane (3-2, 3-2) has lost in overtime. The Wolves dropped an opening-game 27-26 decision to Cameron County.

CURWENSVILLE 42, BROCKWAY 27

BROCKWAY – Jed Greslick and Jesse Hoover combined to score five touchdowns, and David Kalgren threw for three touchdowns to lead Curwensville (4-1 overall, 4-1 AML South) to a 42-27 shootout win at Brockway Friday night.

Greslick ran 28 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 9 yards, while Hoover had five catches for 73 yards and two scores. Kalgren was 10 of 16 passing for 141 yards and three touchdowns while also intercepting a pass on defense and making nine tackles. Ben McGary added 13 carries for 108 yards rushing.

Those performances helped offset another great game from Brockway’s super sophomore Derek Buganza. Buganza was 17 of 31 passing for 260 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while also running 12 times for 24 yards and a touchdown. Aaron Shaffer caught two of the scoring passes and ended the night with four catches for 69 yards, while Mark Shannon had five grabs for 61 yards and a touchdown. Ben Kuhar had a big night on the ground for the Rovers (2-3, 2-3) with 13 carries for 134 yards while also catching four passes for 54 yards. Brockway had run for just 240 yards all season coming into the game.

Curwensville led 21-7 at halftime and 35-14 after three quarters.

JOHNSONBURG 34, RIDGWAY 6

JOHNSONBURG – Ren Yonker threw for two touchdowns and intercepted a pass on defense to lead Johnsonburg to a 34-6 win over Ridgway Friday night.

Yonker was 11 of 14 passing for 112 yards while also running 14 times for 65 yards for the unbeaten Rams (5-0 overall, 5-0 AML South).

Andrew Kowalski caught both scoring passes from Yonker and ended with four catches for 28 yards. Craig Carrow (3 carries, 31 yards; 5 catches, 68 yards) also ran for a touchdown and had an interception, while Mark Myers (7 carries, 33 yards) and Zane Zelehoski (15 carries, 93 yards) also scored on the ground.  

Cory Eschbach (2 catches, 84 yards) caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Joe Renaud (5 of 12, 99 yards, 1 TD, 2 Ints) for Ridgway’s lone score. The Elkers fell to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the AML South.   

It was the 104th meeting between the Elk County rivals. Ridgway leads the all-time series 49-47-8.

OTTO-ELDRED 35, SHEFFIELD 0

DUKE CENTER – Shawn Barnish threw for three touchdowns to lead Otto-Eldred to its first win of the season with a 35-0 shutout over visiting Sheffield Friday night.

Barnish was 11 of 16 passing for 201 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Matt Buck (4 catches, 105 yards) and a third to Zach Williams (3 catches, 23 yards). Justin Bird (10 carries, 68 yards) and Drew Coscia (6 carries, 22 yards) also ran for touchdowns for the Terrors (1-4 overall, 1-4 AML North).

Jesse Parsons led Sheffield (0-5, 0-5) with 13 carries, 65 yards and one catch for six yards.

It was the second straight year Otto has shutout Sheffield.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 32, A-C VALLEY 8

FOXBURG – One losing streak is over while another continues.

Punxsutawney snapped a 14-game skid while handing A-C Valley its 27th consecutive loss with a 32-8 win Friday night in Foxburg.

Sophomore Ben Blazavich, who was in eighth grade the last time the Chucks (1-4 overall, 1-3 KSAC) won a game, and junior Nick Wehrle each rushed for over 100 yards while combining to score five touchdowns helping Punxsy win for the first time since a 7-2 victory over Bald Eagle Area Nov. 3, 2006.

 “These kids deserve it,” Punxsy head coach Blake Moilan told the Punxsutawney Spirit. “They’ve been through a long road.”

Wehrle rushed 14 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Blazavich added nine totes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Logan Weaver and completed one pass in two attempts for 22 yards.

Punxsutawney, which rolled up a season-high 421 yards, led 12-0 at halftime before scoring 20 points in the first 12:07 of the second half to blow the game wide open.   

A-C Valley’s lone score came on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Michael Orrvick to Dillon Montgomery.

CLEARFIELD 56, LEWISTOWN 25

LEWISTOWN – The Isiah Morgan revival continued Friday night.

Clearfield’s senior running back rushed for 348 yards and five touchdowns on just 22 carries to lead the Bisons to a 56-25 win at Lewistown.  

The Bisons (4-1 overall, 3-0 MAC-Nittany League), who have won four straight, led 35-6 at halftime before Lewistown (0-5, 0-4) exploded for 19 second-half points after scoring just 34 through the season’s first four games.

Morgan scored two touchdowns in the first half and then added three more in the second half, while Jarrin Campman ran for two first-half touchdowns while also throwing a touchdown pass in the half.

Connor Muir scored all four touchdowns for the Panthers while rushing 17 times for 99 yards. He was also 9 of 19 passing for 113 yards and an interception.

Morgan's 348 yards are believed to be the second most in District 9 since 2000. Clearfield's Dave Richards ran for 363 yards and seven touchdowns in a game in 2002. 

Campman also had a big game running 11 times for 158 yards and the two touchdowns, while going 2 of 8 passing for 54 yards, the touchdown and an interception. 

BRADFORD 20, MEADVILLE 13

BRADFORD – Mark Havers’ 1-yard touchdown run with 1:22 left lifted Bradford to a 20-13 win over previously unbeaten Meadville Friday night in Bradford.

Bradford (4-1) drove 81 yards in 2:10 to break a 13-all tie. The big play of the drive was a 70-yard pass from Tyler Grandy to Pat Pascarella that moved the ball to the 1-yard line setting up Havers score.

Meadville (4-1) had tied the score at 13 on a 41-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalustian with 3:32 left in the game.

The Bulldogs led 6-3 at halftime before Bradford tied the game on a 28-yard field goal late in the third quarter. It was Nuzzo’s second field goal of the game after he hit a 30 yarder early in the second half.  The Owls then took its first lead of the game on a 34-yard touchdown run by Pat Pascarella in the fourth quarter making it 13-6.

Pat Pascarella ran 12 times for 76 yards and the touchdown and had two catches for 103 yards while making nine tackles on the defense. Havers carried 13 times for 43 yards and the score and added eight tackles on defense. 

KARNS CITY 63, KEYSTONE 7

KNOX – Karns City rolled to its 25th consecutive KSAC victory with a 63-7 thumping of homestanding Keystone Friday night.

The Gremlins (5-0 overall, 5-0 KSAC), who tied the 1994-96 Redbank Valley teams for the second-longest KSAC win streak of all time, led 44-7 at halftime and held Keystone (2-3, 2-3) to 91 yards of offense for the game.

Anthony Stimac accounted for 158 yards and five touchdowns for Karns City including three passing and two rushing. He was 5 of 12 passing for 127 and ran for 58 yards, including a 53-yard scoring run.

Zach Smith led Keystone with 11 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown.  

DUBOIS 24, CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 14

DUBOIS – Backup quarterback Kyle Bish threw a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown, kicked a field goal and picked off a pass on defense to lead DuBois to a 24-14 mild upset over visiting Central Mountain Friday night.

DuBois (3-2 overall, 1-1 MAC-Seven Mountains League) jumped out to a 17-0 lead thanks to a 33-yard Bish touchdown pass to Garrett Malmgren, a 22-yard field goal by Bish and a 14-yard Andrew Gordon scoring run that came early in the third quarter.

Central Mountain (3-2, 0-1) cut the lead to 17-14 with two touchdowns in a span of 1:32 late in the third quarter before Bish’s 3-yard scoring run with one minute left in the game sealed the victory.  

Bish finished the night 6 of 9 passing for 86 yards and the score while running 15 times for 63 yards. Malmgren had four catches for 63 yards while also rushing 15 times for 94 yards.

Matt Overdorf led Central Mountain with 22 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 55 yards.

ST. MARYS 28, PENNS VALLEY 0

SPRING MILLS – St. Marys’ defense continued to shine Friday night helping the Dutch pitch a 28-0 shutout at Penns Valley.

The Dutch (4-1 overall, 4-0 MAC-Seven Mountains League), winners of four straight, have allowed just 33 points all season including just nine during the 4-game win streak. It was the third shutout in the past four games for St. Marys.

This shutout wasn’t easy, as St. Marys had to stop Penns Valley (1-4, 1-4) five times inside the Dutch’s 35-yard line.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Straub led the offense rushing 14 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns with 133 yards and both scores coming in the first half.

Kevin Hoy and Kyle Bennett added second-half touchdowns for St. Marys.
