ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 30, BROCKWAY 26

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic built a 20-point lead at halftime before holding off a late Brockway challenge to get a 30-26 win in AML-South action Saturday night at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys.

The Crusaders (5-1 overall, 5-1 AML South) led 20-0 at halftime and still held a 30-13 advantage following a 4-yard Ricky Pearsall touchdown run with 9:17 to play.

But ECC rallied to within four points on two Ben Kuhar touchdowns. Kuhar scored on a 3-yard run with 7:02 to play to cut the lead to 30-20, and then he caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Derek Buganza with four minutes left making it 30-26.

Brockway then got the ball back twice in the final four minutes including once on an ECC fumble but couldn’t score.

Turnovers killed the Rovers (2-4, 2-4). Brockway lost two fumbles, and Buganza threw two interceptions. One of the lost fumbles was returned eight yards for a touchdown by ECC’s Matt Meholic in the first quarter helping the Crusaders take a 14-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The turnovers also partially explain how Brockway managed to outgain ECC 435 yards to 290 and still lose.

Meholic scored two touchdowns for ECC including a 2-yard run in the second quarter, while also rushing nine times for 26 yards. Josh Catalano led ECC with 17 carries for 150 yards while also kicking a 23-yard field goal and an extra point. Pearsall added 17 carries for 95 yards while also intercepting a pass on defense.

Buganza had another huge game going 26 of 48 passing for 334 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran 14 times for 57 yards.
