BONAVITA STEPS DOWN AS SHEFFIELD HEAD COACH

SHEFFIELD – Sheffield head football coach John Bonavita resigned Monday according to a story in the Warren Times-Observer.

Assistant coach Bryan Gould will be the interim head coach for Sheffield’s final two games.

The Wolverines were 0-8 this season under Bonavita and 1-16 in two seasons of his second stint as the Sheffield head coach. Bonavita was also Sheffield’s coach from 1997 to 2001 leading the Wolverines to a 19-27 mark during that time giving him a seven-year record of 20-43 at the school.

According to two different newspaper reports, Bonavita didn’t coach the second half of Sheffield’s 47-22 loss to Cameron County Saturday with Gould taking his place on the sideline. The Warren Times-Observer in its game story said that Bonavita walked out of the locker room and told the officials “We’re done, we’re not coming back up.” The WTO story goes on to say that moments later Gould informed the official that the Wolverines would finish the game, which they did with 14 players.

According to the WTO story on Bonavita’s resignation, Sheffield athletic director Corey Copley declined comment on what occurred during Saturday’s game or what led to Bonavita resigning.

Bonavita told the WTO that he had to resign for “medical reasons” and that “the kids did everything I asked them to do.”

Sheffield has two games left this season. It’s at Coudersport Friday and hosts Warren County rival Youngsville Nov. 1.
