WEST SUNBURY – Dylan Hipple hit Brian Best with a 22-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left capping a 90-yard drive that lifted Karns City to a 28-26 win over homestanding Moniteau in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Trailing 26-21 with 2:09 left to play, Karns City went on the game-winning drive that included a 53-yard pass from Hipple to Brad Francis and the 22-yard strike to Best in the corner of the end zone.

Hipple finished the night going 8 of 13 passing for 158 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Moniteau led 20-14 at halftime before Karns City took a 21-20 lead on a 44-yard Glenn Toy run. Toy, a sophomore, had eight carries for 102 yards and two scores. Francis had three grabs for 79 yards.

The Warriors retook the lead on a 34-yard pass from Kyle Armagost to Brayden McCorry with 1:47 left in the third quarter, but the two-point conversion run failed.

Armagost was 5 of 14 passing for 101 yards, a touchdown and a pick and also ran 21 times for 72 yards and two scores.

Freshman running back Dustin Geagan had a big coming out party rushing 15 times for 144 yards for Moniteau.

NOTES – It was the third straight regular-season game between the teams decided by two points or less. Moniteau got a 22-21 win last year and a 35-34 win in 2008, although Karns City blew Moniteau out in the District 9 playoffs in 2008 … Overall, it is the seventh time in the last 12 games that a Moniteau-Karns City game had been decided by three points or less. Karns City won 20-18 in the 2006 regular season and 32-29 in the 2006 District 9 playoffs. Moniteau took home a 10-7 win in the 2005 District 9 playoffs and also won 22-20 in the 2003 regular season.
