DuBOIS — Shawn Newpher scored in the first quarter on
an 11-yard run and John Kane returned a kickoff 92 yards for another
touchdown early in the second quarter as the DuBois Beavers held off
visiting Brookville, 14-12, Friday night at E.J. Mansell Stadium. The Kane kickoff return for the Beavers (3-2) turned
out to be a big difference in the game as special teams proved to be
costly on Brookville’s side of the ledger. The Raiders also failed to
convert on any point-after opportunities, botching the first point-after
attempt on a high snap and coming up short on a two-point conversion run
after their second score. DuBois quarterback Sean Sleigh completed 10 of 15
passes for 144 yards but was intercepted twice. Max Hine caught four
passes for 76 yards, intercepted a pass and nearly made a 38-yard field
goal in the second quarter. The Raiders (4-1) got another strong running game
from tailback Ryan Kerr, who rushed for 158 yards and scored the team’s
second touchdown on a 13-yard-run with 1:36 left in the third quarter. Brookville’s chance to tie the game at 14-14 on the
ensuing two-point conversion failed when quarterback Steven Kennedy was
pushed out of bounds near the one on an end run. Kerr looked to have another touchdown run in the bag
when he blasted 48 yards for an apparent score in the final minutes of the
first half, but it was negated when Jared Heschke was called for an
illegal block behind the play at the 12-yard line. The controversial call came one play after Kennedy
nearly pulled off a highlight play scramble when he found a wide-open
Sebastian Kerr inside the 10-yard. However, Kerr dropped the would-be TD
pass. Despite the penalty, the Raiders still reached the
Beavers’ 6 and on second-and-goal, Hine intercepted Kennedy in the end
zone to end the threat. The Beavers’ other scoring chances came in the second
half as Heschke intercepted Sleigh at the Raiders’ 2 on
fourth-and-seven midway through the fourth quarter. Brookville then
stopped the Beavers on downs at the Raiders’ 24 to set up a last ditch
Raiders drive that ran out of time as Heschke caught a pass at the
Beavers’ 26 as time expired. Heschke caught a 9-yard TD pass from Kennedy for
Brookville’s first score with 11:54 left in the second quarter. Tyler
Dombrowski took a high snap on the point-after kick and tried to throw a
two-point conversion pass, but it fell incomplete. Kane then returned the ensuing kickoff for the
Beavers’ final points.
