NEW BETHLEHEM – The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen used second-half touchdown
runs from Justin Quiggle and Kyle Schneider to pull away from the Redbank
Valley Bulldogs and post a 28-14 victory Friday night.
With the game tied at 7-7 coming out of the halftime break, St. Marys took
the second-half kickoff and marched 65 yards, all on the ground, in eight
plays culminating with Schneider going off left tackle for a 33-yard
scamper to put the Dutchmen up 14-7 with 7:58 remaining in the third
quarter.
Following a Brandon Bain punt that Redbank Valley downed on the St. Marys
3=yard line, the Dutchmen embarked on a back breaking 14-play, 97-yard
drive that took eight minutes off the clock.
Quiggle scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 10:17 to go in the
final quarter to put St. Marys up 21-7.
Quiggle scored again on the Dutchmen’s next offensive series, this time on
a 46-yard counter play to make it 28-7 with just over four minutes to
play.
The game started out looking a shootout with both teams scoring the first
time they touched the football.
The Bulldogs won the toss and chose to receive.
Following a kick return out to their own 19-yard line, running back
Caleb Delp took the first handoff from Bain 50 yards, setting up the
Bulldogs down on the Dutchmen 31.
Four plays later Delp scored from six yards out to put Redbank
Valley up 7-0 just 2:54 into the game.
St. Marys answered answer just 2:18 later.
The big play of the drive was a 28-yard carry by Quiggle down to
the Redbank 5-yard line.
Kevin Hoy bulled his way in from there to tie the game at 7 with 6:58
remaining in the first quarter.
From there, both defenses dug in and didn’t allow either offense inside
the 20-yard line for the remainder of the half.
Quiggle finished with another huge night offensively for St. Marys.
Quiggle gained 248 yards on 28 carries and scored twice.
He also added one reception for 18 yards and recovered a fumble on
defense. Kyle Schneider added
75 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
For Redbank Valley, Caleb Delp ran for 158 yards on 20 carries and one
touchdown. Brandon Bain threw for 122 yards on 10 of 18 passing and threw
a 31-yard touchdown pass to Keaton Delp with under a minute to play.
St. Marys (4-2) returns home next Friday night when the host the Dubois
Beavers at Dutch Country Stadium.
Redbank Valley (3-3) travels to Clarion-Limestone next week to take on the
Lions.
Game Notes: St. Marys racked up 413 of total offense…Quiggle’s 248 yards
on the ground were a career high…The Dutch defense, after giving up 137
yards in the first half, only gave up 48 in the second half…It was
homecoming for Redbank Valley.
