BROOKVILLE — Ryan Kerr’s 13-yard touchdown run woke up a dormant Brookville Raiders offense to start the second half, sparking his team to a 25-15 win over visiting Karns City in Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference-Large School Division action Friday night.

The Raiders (6-1 overall, 3-0 KSAC-Large) ran just 13 plays from scrimmage in the first half, but led 10-9 thanks to Josh Frondek’s 45-yard fumble return and kicker Cameron Yard’s 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Kerr’s touchdown came on the opening possession of the second half that was set up by Dylan Zimmerman’s 37-yard kickoff return. Kerr, limited to 10 yards on three carries in the first half, finished with 169 yards on 21 carries. He’s closing in on a 1,000-yard season with 935.

Karns City’s next two possessions were ended by Brookville interceptions of Gremlins quarterback Dylan Hipple in red zone territory. Brock Bietz picked off a pass at the Raiders’ 15 and Steven Kennedy made a highlight film grab at the Raiders’ 10.

Kennedy, also the Raiders quarterback, scored on a 2-yard run with 6:38 left in the game to put the Raiders up 25-9, essentially putting the game away.

Karns City (2-5, 1-2) answered with a touchdown on Tyler Slagle’s 2-yard run with 3:38 remaining. The Gremlins’ shot at a two-point conversion to get within eight points came up empty when Mike Crane sacked Hipple.

Slagle also scored the Gremlins’ first touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Hipple with 8:52 left in the second quarter. Then after stopping the Raiders on a three-and-out, the Gremlins got a 27-yard field goal from Adam Garing with 2:29 remaining in the half.

But Brookville, limited to six plays from scrimmage and no first downs, went 62 yards on six plays to get to the Karns City 11 with 7.4 seconds left in the half. The big play came on Kennedy’s 37-yard pass to Derek Shattenberg.

Kennedy tried to hit Shattenberg in the end zone on the next play, but the pass fell incomplete with 0.5 seconds on the clock. Yard then came in and kicked his field goal, giving the Raiders the momentum going into halftime.

NOTES: The Raiders hadn’t beaten Karns City at home since 1992 with only two losses between then and Friday night. The Raiders outgained the Gremlins, 289-241. … Heschke caught two passes for 30 yards. He’s now tied with Tyler Ross for first place on the team’s all-time list with 73 receptions. At 1,300 career yards receiving, he’s 36 shy of Ross’s record and 26 behind second place Shawn Bailey.
