ST. MARYS – The Dubois Beavers used two big scoring plays in the second half to defeat the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen Friday in a renewal of an old D9 League rivalry at Dutch Country Stadium.

Dubois (4-3) opened up a 21-0 lead with 3:35 left in the third quarter when Sean Sleigh hit Max Hine in the corner of end zone on a 24-yard scoring pass.

St. Marys (4-3) took the ensuing kickoff and drove 67 yards for their first score of the game.  Brian Merritt had three big plays on the drive, runs of 14 and 35 yards and a reception good for 15 yards.  Kevin Hoy ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run cutting the Beaver lead to 21-7.

Kane took the kickoff and raced up the left sideline 80 yards to put Dubois back up three scores, 28-7, just fifteen seconds later.

The Dutchmen again answered, this time with quarterback Brad Yetzer calling his own number, running a QB keeper in from 38 yards out.

Once again though the Beaver big play-offense struck as it was Shawn Newpher scampering 71 yards on the second play of their next possession putting the game away.

Newpher finished the game with 195 yards on 22 carries and 1 touchdown. Sleigh threw for 88 yards on 7 of 9 passing and 2 scores.

Brian Merritt led the Dutchmen offensively, rushing for 60 yards on 6 carries and hauling in 2 passes for 38 yards and a score.  Kevin Hoy added 52 yards rushing.  Yetzer finished with 61 yards on the ground.

Dubois returns to action next week next Friday night when they host Corry.

It will be homecoming for St. Marys next week when Union comes to town on Friday night.

Game notes: Justin Quiggle, the team’s offensive leader coming into the game with 958 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns, suffered a broken leg and is out for the remainder of the season…St. Marys only managed only 32 yards of total offense in the first half.
