District 9 Class A First Round at Redbank Valley | |||||||

Information for this story courtesy of the DuBois Courier Express/Tri-County Sunday NEW BETHLEHEM – In a game filled with turnovers and
not a whole lot of offense, the Redbank Valley Bulldogs shut out visiting
Kane, 15-0, in the District 9 Class A quarterfinals Friday night. The Bulldogs (6-5) advance to next week’s semifinals
against Port Allegany at a site and time to be announced. The Wolves
finished 4-6. Bulldogs quarterback Brandon Bain had a hand in both
of his team’s touchdowns, throwing a 29-yard pass to Keaton Delp in the
second quarter and scoring on a 1-yard run at the end of the third
quarter. Redbank Valley notched a safety before its final
touchdown when it tackled Kane running back Pat Anderson in the end zone
one play after a Bain punt was downed the the Wolves’ 1-yard line. The teams combined for seven turnovers, four for
Redbank Valley and three for Kane. The Wolves were also flagged 14 times
for a whopping 122 yards and their penalty bug aided the Bulldogs in their
first score. A roughing-the-passer and another personal foul
15-yarder on Kane helped Redbank Valley move 85 yards in its first scoring
drive. The big play came at the end when, on fourth-and-4 from the Kane
29, Bain found Delp in the end zone. After the safety put the Bulldogs up 9-0, Redbank
Valley turned a Kane miscue into points. Keaton Delp intercepted Kane
quarterback at the Wolves’ 31 and returned it inside the 10-yard-line. A
double personal foul penalty led to an ejection of a Wolves player and
moved the ball to the 1-yard-line. Bain then scored on the first play on
offense and the Bulldogs had their 15-0 lead. Kane had its chances as well, coming up empty in
three possessions in the Bulldogs’ red zone. On one chance, the Wolves
appeared headed to the end zone after stripping Kyle Lee of the ball on a
Lee run, but an inadvertent whistle blew the play dead. While the Wolves
got the ball, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the ball back to
their own 42 and killed the scoring chance. Kane also got deep into Bulldogs territory late in
the fourth quarter, but Mike Kocjancic fumbled the ball away after a pass
completion at the Bulldogs’ 20. Earlier in the game, the Wolves fumbled
the ball away at the Bulldogs’ 19. Redbank Valley advanced to the semifinals for the
third time in the five years it’s been a Class A school. The Bulldogs beat
Keystone in 2006 and Elk County Catholic in 2007. They’ve never gotten
past the Class A semifinals. Kane was playing in its second playoff game since
winning the Class A title in 2007. The Wolves lost in last year’s Class AA
semifinals to Karns City, 40-0.
