PUNXSUTAWNEY 27, DUBOIS 7

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Logan Weaver threw a pair of touchdown passes, and the Punxsutawney defense limited DuBois to 146 total yards in lead the Chucks to a 27-7 win over the visiting Beavers Friday night.

Weaver threw first-half scoring passes of 8 yards to Corban Cressley and 12 yards to Zak Dickey helping Punxsutawney take a 21-7 halftime lead. Weaver also chipped in on defense with an interception, one of three picks of DuBois starting quarterback Sean Sleigh by the Punxsy defense.

On the night, Weaver was 6 of 9 passing for 67 yards and the two scores while running nine times for 14 yards. First-year starting running back Jason Fallara added 97 yards rushing on 12 carries and scored on a 6-yard run in the first half. Ben Blazavich chipped in 22 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Sleigh was 7 of 17 passing for 65 yards, a touchdown and three picks. Max Hines caught four balls for 18 yards including a 10-yard touchdown pass, while Shawn Newpher had 15 carries for 37 yards.

BROCKWAY 49, SHEFFIELD 21

BROCKWAY – Derek Buganza picked up where he left off last year throwing for 310 yards and five touchdowns while completing 14 of 17 passes to lead Brockway to a season-opening 49-21 win over visiting Sheffield Friday night.

Buganza, who also ran the ball twice for 29 yards, spread the ball around with Zack Freemer, Mike Vervoort and Kyle Braun each catching four passes. Freemer had 101 yards receiving and three touchdowns, Vervoort had 89 yards and two scores and Braun 33 yards and a touchdown.

Brockway led 42-0 at halftime and 49-0 less than two minutes into the second half when Joe Caruso returned an interception 25 yards.

Ike Nearing led Sheffield going 11 of 16 passing for 214 yards and a touchdown while throwing two picks. He also ran for 23 yards and a touchdown. Nick Bonavita had five catches for 130 yards.  Kalil Slaughter ran for 96 yards and a touchdown and caught a pair of balls for 28 yards and a touchdown.

CURWENSVILLE 49, SMETHPORT 26

CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville exploded for 27 unanswered third-quarter points to turn a 15-6 halftime lead into a 49-26 rout of Smethport in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Curwensville.

Alex Holland, who ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns while catching three passes for six yards and a score, scored twice in 33 seconds early in the third quarter to help the Tide pull away.

First-year starting quarterback Hunter McCracken added three touchdown passes for Curwensville while going 6 of 11 passing for 77 yards with Shane Hoover catching a touchdown pass and also returning a punt 78 yards for a score. Shea Best added an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Smethport got a 5-yard touchdown run by Kolin Strawcutter, a 52-yard pass from Jory Okerlund to Kevin Lord and a 15-yard run by Lord. Lord ran for 16 yards and caught two passes for 61 yards.

CLEARFIELD 42, CENTRAL-MARTINSBURG 14

HYDE –Curtis Frye accounted for four touchdowns, two passing, two rushing, to lead Clearfield to a 42-14 win over visiting Central-Martinsburg Friday night.

Frye was 17 of 22 passing for 237 yards including scoring tosses of 13 yards and 21 yards to Derek Danver while also running 15 times for a game-high 85 yards including scoring runs of two and one yard.

Derek Morgan chipped in 54 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Danver had six catches for 77 yards.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 34, CAMERON COUNTY 12

EMPORIUM – Ricky Pearsall ran 27 times for 173 yards and three touchdowns while returning the opening kickoff of the game 89 yards for a score to help visiting Elk County Catholic stun Cameron County 34-12 Friday night.

The loss was the first non-AML Title Game, non-playoff game defeat for Cameron County since the Red Raiders lost 13-7 at home to Johnsonburg Oct. 27, 2006, a span of 27 games.  

Cameron County led 12-7 following a 12-yard Jason Blose run, but ECC scored 27 unanswered points to get the win.

BRADFORD 47, OLEAN (NY) 0

BRADFORD – Pat Pascarella rushed for 298 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries to lead Bradford to a 47-0 win over rival Olean (NY) Friday night in Brockway.

Pascarella scored on runs of 11, 32 and 63 yards to pace an Owls’ offense that racked up 525 yards, all rushing, and scored 40 points in the middle two quarters after a scoreless first 12 minutes.

Mark Havers added 99 yards rushing and a touchdown for Bradford, which also got touchdown run from Cody Coats and Josh Corigani and a 5-yard interception return for a score by Kyle Payne.  

COUDERSPORT 35, JOHNSONBURG 22

COUDERSPORT – Coudersport exploded for big play after big play en route to a 35-22 win over Johnsonburg Friday.

The Falcons (1-0) led 21-6 at halftime thanks to a 25-yard Tim McCusker to Caden Whitman touchdown pass and scoring runs of 62 yards by Kory Majot and 92 by Mitch Freeman.

“Those two big runs in the second quarter were huge for us,” Coudersport’s first-year head coach Chris Fink told the Bradford Era. “Credit our offensive line for two big runs.”

Majot and McCusker added second half touchdowns for the Falcons.

Freeman led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 139 yards and the score, while Majot had 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

PORT ALLEGANY 55, RIDGWAY 14

RIDGWAY – Camrin Stuckey had a huge game for Port Allegany accounting for four total touchdowns in the Gators 55-14 romp over Ridgway Friday night.

Stuckey caught four passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns while adding a 75-yard kickoff return for a score.

Matt Bodamer, meanwhile, was 9 of 11 passing with three touchdowns and also ran for 85 yards and a score on seven carries.

Seth Lowery was the big ground gainer for Port rushing 13 times for 133 yards.

All 55 of Port Allegany’s points came in the first half.

Ridgway got a pair of first-quarter touchdowns from D.J. Skraba. The senior scored on a 57-yard run and on a 92-yard kickoff return.

KANE 41, OTTO-ELDRED 0

DUKE CENTER — Kane had no trouble on the road getting a 41-0 win over Otto-Eldred Friday.

Kane (1-0) scored 14 points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game.

Alex Anderson led the way offensively for Kane, which scored 14 points in the first two-and-half minutes of the game, scoring two rushing touchdowns with Dylan Eckstrom also adding one score on the ground. The Wolves had 301 yards rushing on 31 attempts.

O-E (0-1) had just 120 total yards in offense.

REDBANK VALLEY 19, UNION 16

NEW BETHLEHEM – Redbank Valley overcame a 16-12 third-quarter deficit to pick up its 13th straight win over Union 19-16 Friday night at Redbank Valley giving head coach Frank Fabian his first career win as a head mentor.

Union, which last beat Redbank Valley in 1997, led 8-6 at halftime before falling behind 12-8 early in the third quarter. But Trent Corle, who earlier in the game hit Taylor Smith with a 27-yard touchdown pass, scored on a 2-yard run to make it 16-12.

Kyle Lee, though, gave the Bulldogs the lead back for good with a 10-yard touchdown run later in the quarter.

Caleb Delp led Redbank Valley with nine carries for 92 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 45 yards.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 32, A-C VALLEY 19

FOXBURG – Clarion-Limestone rallied from an early 13-0 deficit to hand A-C Valley its 41st loss in a row 32-19 Friday night at A-C Valley.

The Falcons (0-1), who last won Oct. 7, 2005, against Union, raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a Lee Russell 1-yard run and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Kasey McNany to Jared Uncapher. A Cole Hardick 1-yard run in the second quarter helped A-C Valley take a 19-13 halftime lead.

But C-L rallied in the second half behind quarterback Billy Kelley, who threw three of his four touchdown passes in the half.

Kelly was 11 of 21 for 237 yards and four touchdowns while also throwing a pick. Zach Kemmer had seven catches for 174 yards and two scores while adding eight tackles on defense. Cole Lyle had nine tackles and two sacks to pace the Lions defense.

McNany was 9 of 23 for 118 yards and the touchdown for A-C Valley with Uncapher grabbing six balls for 68 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Ferris had a pair of sacks on defense.
