The other three 1A teams – D9 champion Johnsonburg, North Clarion and Cameron County- all lost as did D9 4A champion Clearfield.

Here is a look at the games.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 66, JAMESTOWN 40

CLARION, Pa. – Ryan Newton and Alex Breindel combined to score 41 points to lift District 9 runner-up Elk County Catholic to a 66-40 win over District 10 runner-up Jamestown in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

Newton netted a game-high 22 points for the Crusaders (22-6) with Breindel adding 19 tallies. It marks the fourth straight year ECC has won a first-round game and the 15th time since 1999 the Crusaders have a first-round win.

Behind nine points from Newton, ECC led 11-3 at the end of a quarter and built the lead to double digits, 27-16, at halftime with Newton scoring eight more points in the second quarter.

Breindel then hit a pair of third-quarter three-pointers to help ECC extend the advantage to 48-31 after 24 minutes of action.

Dawson Urbansky led Jamestown (12-13) with 13 points with Daruan Keyser adding seven.

ECC will face District 6 champion Bishop Carroll, an 86-76 winner over Imani Christian, in the second round Tuesday at a site and time to be announced.

EDEN CHRISTIAN 30, JOHNSONBURG 28

CLARION, Pa. – In the lowest scoring PIAA 1A boys’ playoff game in seven years, WPIAL sixth-place finished Eden Christian stunned District 9 champion, Johnsonburg, 30-28, at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

The Rams (19-8) led 20-17 at halftime but were outscored 13-8 in the second half including not scoring in the fourth quarter – Johnsonburg didn’t even miss a free throw in the quarter.

The 30 points are the lowest for a boys’ Class 1A PIAA winner since at least 1982, which is as far back as scores for PIAA playoff games on the PIAA website go.

Chase Hearing led Eden Christian (17-6), which outscored Johnsonburg 2-0 in the fourth quarter, with 13 points with Dylan Kingan adding 10.

Austin Green had 13 points to pace Johnsonburg.

The last time fewer than 58 total points were scored in a PIAA Class 1A boys’ game was in 2011 when Reading Central Catholic beat Old Forge, 32-21, in the second round. The 32 points scored by Reading CC in that game was also the previous lowest point total for a Class 1A winner since 1982.

Eden Christian will play Shanksville in the second round Tuesday.

BUTLER, Pa. – Tre Charles exploded for 35 points to lead Union-New Castle to a 71-56 win over North Clarion in the PIAA Class 1A first round at Butler High School.

Evan Pinkerton chipped in 13 points for Union-New Castle.

Kyle Mills paced North Clarion (21-5), the District 9 third-place finisher, with 21 points with Keeven Weaver adding eight.
