Jan. 3, 2020 Girls’ Hoops: Tanner’s Late Shot Gives Smethport Win; Clarion Holds Off Karns City in OT

SMETHPORT 30, CAMERON COUNTY 29

SMETHPORT, Pa. – Sabrina Tanner’s layup off an inbound pass with 4.8 seconds left gave Smethport a 30-29 win over visiting Cameron County in NTL action.

After leading 21-12 at halftime, Smethport trailed 25-23 going to the fourth quarter after being outscored 13-2 in the third quarter by the Lady Raiders.

But in the final frame, the Lady Hubbers defense cracked down holding Cameron County to four points.

Smethport, however, had scored just five of its own, two by Tanner, going into the final seconds when the inbounds play struck gold for the win.

Erin Herzog led all scorers with 10 points for Smethport with Tanner scoring seven and MyKayla Deyarmin six.

Mikenna Farabaugh and Kaelee Bresslin led Cameron County with seven points each.

CLARION 44, KARNS CITY 43, overtime

KARNS CITY, Pa. – Clarion hit 5 of 6 free throws in overtime to outlast Karns City, 44-43, for a KSAC South road victory.

The Lady Cats trailed by four, 29-25, going to the fourth quarter but got five fourth-quarter points from Kait Constantino and a big fourth-quarter 3-pointer from Ava Cherico to tie the game at 37 at the end of regulation.

Then in overtime, Jordan Best scored four points, while going 2 of 2 from the free-throw line, and Payton Simko was also 2-for-2 from the line to help Clarion pull out the win.

Down three, 44-41, Karns City had a chance to tie the game late, but Emma Johns elected for the two-point play with three seconds left to cut the deficit to one, and the Lady Gremlins couldn’t stop the clock.

Constantino had a game-high 21 points but had some uncharacteristic struggles from the line going 11 of 17, although she hit her final three in the fourth quarter. Best added nine points for Clarion with Simko and Cherico each scoring six.

Johns led Karns City with 14 points, all after halftime, with Brooke Manuel adding eight points and Rossi McMillen six points and 10 rebounds.

BROCKWAY 64, CURWENSVILLE 19

BROCKWAY, Pa. – Danielle Wood and Morgan Lindemuth combined for 35 points to help Brockway top Curwensville, 64-19, on the road in AML action.

Wood led the Lady Rovers with 18 points and five steals while Lindemuth chipped in 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Selena Buttery netted nine points and had nine boards.

Alyssa Bakaysa had seven points to pace the Lady Tide in the loss.

KANE 52, SHEFFIELD 16

KANE, Pa. – Solid defense and a balanced offensive attack got Kane off to a good start in the New Year with the Lady Wolves topping visiting Sheffield, 52-16, in AML action.

Despite a 12-0 first quarter, Kane struggled to score early on. Rainee Wright and Sarri Swanson combined for 10 first-quarter points to set the tone in the later parts of the quarter for Kane.

Madi Koza led Kane with nine points. Swanson, Emily Bucheit and Sierra Hillman added eight points, Wright and Ainsley Saf each had six.

Alyssa Dunham led Sheffield with nine tallies.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 48, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 34

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Taylor Newton scored 18 points and hauled in 20 rebounds to lead Elk County Catholic to a 48-34 win over visiting DuBois Central Catholic in AML play.

Julia Aikens and Tami Geci each added seven points for the Lady Crusaders.

Shay Gulvas scored 17 points to lead DCC.

ST. MARYS 44, BRADFORD 27

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Kaylee Muccio led a balanced St. Marys effort with 12 points, as the Lady Dutch knocked off visiting Bradford, 44-27, in D9 League play.

Giorgia Baciga added 10 points for St. Marys with Allison Schlimm chipped in nine points.

Hannah Lary paced Bradford with 13 points.

CRANBERRY 38, KEYSTONE 25

SENECA, Pa. – Maddie Cornelius scored 11 points to lead a balanced Cranberry effort in a key 38-25 win over Keystone in KSAC South play.

Kaia Dean chipped in 10 points for the Berries, who handed Keystone its first KSAC South loss, while Megan Hadden added eight tallies. Ava Ferringer (11 rebounds, 4 points) and Kaylie Bruce (7 rebounds, 5 points) hit the boards hard for Cranberry.

Emily Lauer scored 10 points for Keystone with Danae Hurrelbrink scoring seven.

REDBANK VALLEY 62, MONITEAU 40

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Madison Foringer netted 20 points to lead a balanced offensive attack in Redbank Valley’s 62-40 victory over visiting Moniteau in KSAC South play.

Tara Hinderliter added 19 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Alivia Huffman had eight tallies and Lauren Smith chipped in six.

Ashlyn Pry had 20 points and eight rebounds to pace the Lady Warriors in the loss.

NORTH CLARION 57, VENANGO CATHOLIC 17

OIL CITY, Pa. – Mackenzie Bauer and Abby Gatesman combined to score 31 points to lead North Clarion to a 57-17 win at Venango Catholic in KSAC North play.

Bauer led North Clarion with 16 points with Gatesman adding 15. Gabby Schmader chipped in seven points.

Mariah Wessell led Venango Catholic with seven points with Emmy Ekis adding six.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 55, FOREST AREA 21

MARIENVILLE, Pa. – Anna Kennemuth exploded for 23 points as visiting Clarion-Limestone topped Forest Area, 55-21.

Francis Milliron added 13 points for the Lady Lions with Sydney Simpson and Kendall Dunn each chipping in five tallies.

Jen Lander paced the Fires with six points.

NORTHERN POTTER 37, OSWAYO VALLEY 17

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Aubrey Anderson and Courtney Martin combined to score 22 points to lead Northern Potter to a 37-17 road NTL win over Oswayo Valley.

Anderson led the Lady Panthers with 12 points with Martin adding 10.

Jaydn Brabham led Oswayo Valley with 11 points.

COUDERSPORT 52, PORT ALLEGANY 42

COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Sarah Chambers led a trio of double-digit scorers to help Coudersport upend visiting Port Allegany, 52-42, in NTL action.

Chambers netted a team-high 14 points for the Lady Falcons with Roz Page and Mikayla Gunn each chipping in 12. Lauren Stimaker went 5-for-6 at the line and finished with nine points.

Cailey Barnett had a game-high 17 points for the Lady Gators in the loss. Bree Garzel hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

OTTO-ELDRED 53, AUSTIN 13

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – Kayley Heller had a double-double to lead Otto-Eldred past Austin, 53-13, for a home NTL victory.

Kayley Heller scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lady Terrors. Bri Heller added nine points and racked up 13 rebounds with Reilly Raught chipping in nine points and five rebounds. Katie Sheeler had five points, five assists and four rebounds.

Shae Setzer paced the Lady Panthers with five points and four rebounds.

SALTSBURG 62, BROOKVILLE 46

SALTSBURG, Pa. – Abbie Dickie scored 21 points to lead Saltsburg past visiting Brookville, 62-46.

Makenzie Simpson added 15 points for the Trojans with Courtney Battistelli adding 12 tallies.

Marcy Schindler paced Brookville with 19 points with Lauren Hergert adding 11.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 48, CLEARFIELD 27

HYDE, Pa. – A 24-point second quarter helped visiting Punxsutawney roll past Clearfield, 48-27.

The Lady Chucks trailed 9-4 at the end of the first quarter but led 28-14 at halftime.

Sarah Weaver led the way for Punxsutawney with 23 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot with Chloe Presloid adding 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Thirteen of Weaver’s 23 points came in the second quarter when she hit three 3-pointers, while Presloid hit a pair of triples in the second quarter and scored seven of her points in the frame.

Tesa Miller had 14 points for Clearfield.
