Sept. 3 Volleyball Recaps: Burns Leads Clarion Past Redbank Valley in Battle of Defending Champs

CLARION 3, REDBANK VALLEY 0

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a showdown of the defending District 9 Class 1A and Class 2A champions, visiting Clarion swept past Redbank Valley, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-14).

Korrin Burns had a strong night for the Lady Cats with 15 kills, while Maddie Schill added three kills, eight digs and two blocks. Kait Constantino chipped in with eight kills and three digs, KK Girvan had six digs and Aryana Girvan added three blocks and two kills. Brenna Campbell ran the offense with 24 assists and added three digs.

Montana Hetrick paced Redbank Valley with six kills with Taylor King adding four kills and two blocks. Tara Hinderliter ran the offense with 18 assists, and Lauren Smith added three aces.

CRANBERRY 3, UNION 1

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Emily Duncan had 23 digs and 16 assists to help visiting Cranberry kick off the season with a 3-1 (25-7, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18) victory over Union.

Maddie Cornelius had a team-high 25 digs for the Berries while Kaylee Bruce added 16. Maria Anderson chipped in for seven kills, Ava Ferringer had six kills and 14 digs and Sara Allaman had 13 digs.

Dominika Logue had five kills and two blocks for Union with Morgan Cumberland adding 27 set assists.

GALETON 3, AUSTIN 0

GALETON, Pa. – Galeton swept Austin 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-20) in the season opener.

Alli Macensky had nine kills for the Lady Tigers while Makenna Shuemaker ran the offense with 10 assists. Maddie Sauley added six kills and Alexis Johnson chipped in for seven.

Kylie Welsh had four blocks for Austin.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 3, BRADFORD 0

BRADFORD, Pa. – Behind 16 kills from Taylor Newton, visiting ECC swept Bradford, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 26-24).

Brooke Bauer and Madyson Dellaquila each had four kills for the Lady Crusaders while Julia Aiken had six. Dellaquila had a block while Ellie Fledderman had a team-high 28 assists.

Sarie Yohe led Bradford with five kills and four blocks, Alex Asp had four kills and nine blocks, Alix Ordiway chipped in four kills, Erica Marshall had two kills and 17 digs and Laney Kayla had 16 assists and six blocks for Bradford.

CAMERON COUNTY 3, NORTHERN POTTER 0

ULYSSES, Pa. – Cameron County starts the season off with a win after sweeping Northern Potter, 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-18).

Hailey Hilgiger led the Lady Red Raiders with 11 kills and six digs. Morgan Lorenzon chipped in for 12 digs and four kills.

Savannah Herring had seven kills and two blocks for Northern Potter.

MONITEAU 3, NORTH CLARION 0

WEST SUNBURY, Pa. – Samantha Broerman and Abby Regal combined for nine kills to help Moniteau sweep North Clarion, 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-12).

Broerman had four kills while Regal had five for the Lady Warriors. Ivie Scott added eight digs while Logan Barnhart ran the offense with six assists.

Gabby Schmader paced the She-Wolves with 13 digs and a kill. Emily Ates had seven kills and three blocks while Dylen Mealy added three blocks and two kills. Lily Parish had five kills and Sara Aaron had a team-high 14 assists.

JOHNSONBURG 3, SHEFFIELD 0

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Behind six kills from Jenna Morgan, Johnsonburg topped Sheffield, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18).

Also for the Ramettes, Haylee Cherry had six aces.

For Sheffield, Emily Leichtenberger had four kills, Megan Johnson had 12 assists and Marissa Grubbs 13 digs.

DUBOIS 3, CURWENSVILLE 0

DUBOIS, Pa. – DuBois used a balanced team effort to sweep visiting Curwensville, 3-0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-13).

Taylor Smith, Sydney Kaschalk and Kaylee Sadowski each had four kills for the Lady Beavers. Cayla Donahue had seven kills and eight digs while Cate Gregory tallied 16 assists.

KEYSTONE 3, KARNS CITY 1

KNOX, Pa. – Cearya Altman and Alyssa Dunlap each had eight kills as Keystone defeated Karns City, 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23).

McKenna Kaye ran the Lady Panthers offense with 16 assists while Leah Exley had seven blocks. Emma Burrows chipped in for eight digs.

Cassidy Nolan and Rozina McCanna each had five blocks for the Lady Gremlins.

OSWAYO VALLEY 3, OTTO-ELDRED 1

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Jadyn Brabham and Avaree Keller combined for 25 kills to lead Oswayo Valley past visiting Otto-Eldred, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-21).

Brabham led the Green Wave with 13 kills while adding five aces and three blocks, while Kellert had 12 kills, three blocks and an ace.

Also for Oswayo Valley, Macy West chipped in seven kills, three blocks and two aces and Johanna Dickerson ran the offense with 20 assists while adding two aces and a kill.

Haley Cousins paced Otto-Eldred with nine kills with Reilly Raught adding eight kills, Emmalee Sheeler 24 set assists and Jadelyn Spinney four aces.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 3, VENANGO CATHOLIC 0

OIL CITY, Pa. – Behind 11 combined kills from Brooke Kessler and Cassidy Makray, Clarion-Limestone picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-22) win at Venango Catholic.

Kessler had six kills for the Lady Lions with Makray adding five kills, eight assists and four aces.

Also for C-L, Regan Husted had four assists, Summer McLaine, Janelle Pezzuti, Ruby Smith and Bailey Smith each had two digs and Ruby Smith added five aces.

For Venango Catholic, Emmy Ekis had two kills and four aces and Mackenzie Metz had a kill and three assists.

COUDERSPORT 3, SMETHPORT 0

COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Behind a strong all-around game from Lauren Stimaker, Coudersport beat visiting Smethport, 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-15).

Stimaker had 16 assists, three kills, five aces, two digs and a block for the Lady Falcons who also got five kills and two blocks and Addie Myers, 16 digs and an ace from Emma Saulter and four kills from Makayla Kavounas.

Alyn Thomas paced Smethport with five kills, four blocks and an assists. Lexi Shall had four kills, two blocks and two assists.

BROOKVILLE 3, BROCKWAY 0

BROCKWAY, Pa. – Lauren Hergert had eight kills and five blocks to lead Brookville to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-16) win at Brockway.

Brooke Ganoe and Morgan Johnson both had strong nights serving for the Lady Raiders.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 3, RIDGWAY 0

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Murphy White, Katelyn Griebel and Lizzie Neal combined for 16 kills to lead Punxsutawney to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) win over visiting Ridgway.

White paced the Lady Chucks with six kills with Griebel and Neal each adding five kills.

Grace Hall ran the offense for Punxsutawney with 20 assists with Bella McDivitt leading the defense with 18 digs.

KANE 3, ST. MARYS 2

ST. MARYS, Pa. – In a back-and-forth match, Kane toppled homestanding St. Marys, 3-2 (25-11, 23-25, 27-25, 7-25, 15-13).

Audri Marconi led the Lady Wolves with 13 kills with Sarri Swanson adding seven. Kalen Johnson and Sierra Hillman each had five aces.

Kill leaders for St. Marys – exact totals weren’t available – were Saige Heigel and Linsey Reiter.
