Thursday wrestling at states: 10 reach quarterfinals

HERSHEY — Of the 27 District 9 wrestlers who started at the PIAA Wrestling Championships, only four failed to make Friday at the Giant Center.

However, not all escaped the first day unscathed. In Class AA, nine wrestlers opened Friday’s schedule at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals. Those nine are a win away from securing a state medal. A win in the quarterfinals guarantees a top-six medal finish. The top eight overall win medals.

Seven wrestlers opened with a loss, but got a bye in the consolation round and start Friday in the second-round of consolations. Three opened with losses, but won in the first round of consolations. Three wrestlers went 0-2 and were eliminated.

One wrestler, Ridgway’s Ryan Geyer, won his preliminary bout at 195 pounds, lost in the first round and then won a consolation bout to go 2-1 on the first day.

Brookville’s Gavin Park, Taylor Ortz and Jimmy Miller, Brockway’s Ryan Carlson and Mason Lindenmuth, Curwensville’s Shae Bloom, Redbank Valley’s Keshon Truitt and Smethport’s James Duffy, Keystone’s Tyler Beal wrestle in the quarterfinals that start at 9 a.m.

In Class AAA, only Punxsutawney’s Kaleb Young won his opener to reach the quarterfinals. DuBois’ Kolby Ho and Clearfield’s Luke McGonigal lost their first bouts and start Friday in the consolation bracket while Punxsutawney’s Perry Arrington was eliminated after going 0-2.

Along with the Class AA quarterfinals starting at 9 a.m. is the second-round consolations with third-round consolations beginning at 11:15 a.m. Class AAA begins with quarterfinals and second-round consolations at 1:30 p.m., and third-round consolations at 3:45 p.m.

More Class AA wrestling finishes Friday’s schedule with the semifinals set for 6:30 p.m. followed by two more rounds of consolations to set up Saturday’s top-eight place bouts at 2 p.m.

Friday, Class AAA has quarterfinals and second-round consolations starting at 1:30, and third-round consolations at 3:45 p.m. Saturday morning, semifinals start at 9 a.m. along with two rounds of consolations to set up the place bouts beginning at 7 p.m.
