UNION QUARTERBACK LIPPS NAMED INAUGURAL D9SPORTS.COM "PLAYER OF THE WEEK"

Union quarterback Brian Lipps is the winner of the inaugural D9SPORTS.COM "Player of the Week" award thanks to his performance against Moniteau Friday, Sept. 1.

In leading the Golden Knights to a 30-21 victory, Lipps went 9-25 passing for 139 yards and threw four touchdown passes.

His touchdown passes went for 25, 10, 9 and 33 yards respectively. It was Lipps's first start at quarterback.

Many other players throughout the district had stellar performances last Friday.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RIDGWAY -- Ridgway quarterback Brandon Steger is the D9SPORTS.COM Football Player of the Week for Week Two of the 2000 season.

Steger, a junior, was 9 of 11 passing for 198 yards and four touchdowns in the Elkers 29-14 win over Elk County Christian in an AML South game Saturday night at ECC.

Steger, who wasn't originally slated to play quarterback this season, hit receivers for TD passes of seven, 22, 23 and 62 yards in the win.

He has helped Ridgway, who was ranked 10th in last week's Pennsylvania Football News Class A state-wide poll, to a 2-0 start including a 1-0 start in the AML South.

BROCKWAY'S CANTAFIO D9SPORTS.COM PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BROCKWAY -- Brockway wingback Aaron Cantafio is the third D9Sports.Com Player of the Week after he rushed for 197 yards and four touchdowns in Brockway's 34-12 win over Cameron County Friday night. 

Cantafio's big rushing night put him over the 3,000-yrad mark for his career. The senior now has 3,116 yards. 

His scoring runs were from 2, 1, 17 and 10 yards out, and he also added a two-point conversion run giving him 26 points on the night.

CLARION'S CATHCART D9SPORTS.COM PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CLARION -- Clarion Area junior running back Kyle Cathcart is the D9SPORTS.COM District 9 Player of the Week for Week Four of the 2000 season.

Cathcart earned the honors by rushing for 253 yards and four touchdowns in the Bobcats 34-0 win at cross-town rival Clarion-Limestone Friday night, Sept. 22.

Cathcart has rushed for 521 yards and 11 touchdowns in four games this season helping the Bobcats to a 4-0 start and a No. 2 ranking in the state in Class A by the Pennsylvania Football News.

MONITEAU'S STAAB D9SPORTS.COM PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WEST SUNBURY -- Moniteau running back Bill Staab is the D9SPORTS.COM Player of the Week for Week Five.

Staab carried the ball 27 times for 282 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Warriors' 42-22 loss to Redbank Valley Friday, Sept. 29.

Staab's touchdown runs went for 67, 15 and 77 yards.

WEEK FIVE HONORABLE MENTION SELECTIONS

Matt Harnish -- Curwensville: Quarterback Harnish went 12-18 passing for 163 yards and one touchdown in Curwensville's 48-14 over Johnsonburg Friday night. Harnish has led the Golden Tide to a 5-0 record.

Ryan Kesterholt -- Brookville: Kesterholt rushed for 157 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns in Brookville's 32-15 win over Grove City Friday night. Brookville's win over Grove City was its first victory of the season.

Matt Melillo -- Brookville: Melillo went 8 for 14 passing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown in Brookville's 32-15 win over Grove City Friday night.

Dustin Dickant -- Ridgway: Dickant registered 130 yards on 13 carries and scored a team-high three touchdowns in Ridgway's 24-14 victory over Cameron County Friday night. With the win, the Elkers improved their record to 4-1.

Dustin Ruberto -- St. Marys: Running back Ruberto carried the ball 15 times for 116 yards in St. Marys' 48-14 loss to Bradford Friday night.

Matt Grillo -- Bradford: Grillo had two interceptions and returned one of them 41 yards for a touchdown in Bradford's 48-14 win over St. Marys Friday night.

Elliot George -- Bradford: George rushed for three touchdowns in Bradford 's 48-14 win over St. Marys Friday night. George's TD runs went 16, 3 and 33 yards.

Dan Patton -- Clarion: Patton scored on both sides of the ball in Clarion's 82-0 dismantling of West Shamokin Friday night. Patton had three carries of 85 yards including TD runs of 63 and 25 yards. He also returned an interception 19 yards for a touchdown.

Tyson Shreckengost -- Redbank Valley: Shreckengost turned in a strong all-around performance in the Bulldogs' 42-22 win over Moniteau Friday night. He caught three passes for 106 yards including an 83-yard TD reception. He also had a 28-yard touchdown run while carrying the ball six times for 53 yards. Defensively, he nabbed an interception.

Ben Brooks -- Clarion-Limestone: Brooks picked up the pace for an injured Dan Alderton in C-L's 14-6 win over Union Friday night with 143 yards on 19 carries.

Aaron Cantafio -- Brockway: Former D9SPORTS.COM Player of the Week Cantafio made it onto the list with 120 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown in Brockway's 30-0 win over Elk County Christian Saturday night.

Tyler Butler -- Clearfield: Butler got the job done when it counted the most with a 27-yard field goal in overtime in Clearfield's 23-20 win over Bellefonte Friday night.

Matt Meckey -- Clearfield: Meckey helped Clearfield defeat Bellefonte 23-20 in overtime Friday night with 101 yards on 21 carries including a game-high three rushing touchdowns.

Dave Richards -- Clearfield: Richards was Clearfield's other 100-yd. rusher in the Bisons' 23-20 overtime win over Bellefonte Friday night. Richards gained 100 yards on 14 carries.

Marc Shelgren -- Smethport: Shelgren rushed for 85 yards on 12 carries and scored one touchdown in the Hubbers' 28-14 win over Sheffield. Defensively, he led Smethport with 24 tackles.

KNOX -- Keystone junior quarterback Adam Black is the D9Sports.Com District 9 Football Player of the Week for Week Six of the 2000 season.

Black earned the award after completing 18-of-32 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in Keystone's 32-28 win over A-C Valley Friday night at Keystone.

KANE -- Kane sophomore quarterback Tyler Smith is the D9Sports.Com District 9 Football Player of the Week for Week 7 of the 2000 season.

Smith earned the honors while helping the Wolves (5-2) remain in the playoff hunt with a 21-12 win at Ridgway Friday night.

In the game, Smith was 13-of-19 passing for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

BROCKWAY'S CANTAFIO PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BROCKWAY -- Brockway senior running back Aaron Cantafio is the D9Sports.Com District 9 Player of the Week for Week 8 of the 2000 season.

Cantafio, who earns the award for the second time this season, rushed for a career-high 282 yards, three touchdowns and a two-point conversion in Brockway's 26-21 win over Coudersport Friday night. He also caused the fumble that Mike Greco recovered in the end zone for the winning score with 2:53 left in the game. 

In the game Cantafio is believed to be the first District 9 running back to go over 4,000 yards in his career. He now has 4,165 yards rushing in his career. 

Brockway is now 7-1 on the season.

BROCKWAY'S CANTAFIO, CLARION'S CATHCART CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Brockway senior running back Aaron Cantafio and Clarion junior running back Kyle Cathcart are the D9Sports.com District 9 Co- Players of the Week for Week 9 of the 2000 season.

Cantafio, who earns the award for the third time this season, rushed for 200 yards on 21 carries (9.5 avg.), scored five touchdowns and intercepted a pass in Brockway's 35-6 win over Sheffield Friday night. Cantafio scored all five of Brockway's touchdowns, finding the end zone on runs of 50, 3, 13, 2 and 3 yards. Cantafio, believed to be the leading rusher in D-9 history, has 4,365 career yards and 1,670 yards and 23 touchdowns on the season.

Brockway is now 8-1 on the season and headed to the D-9 Class AA playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The Rovers will host Brookville Friday, Nov. 3 in a Class AA semifinal contest.

Meanwhile, Cathcart, the "Player of the Week" for the second time this season, carried the ball 22 times for 262 yards (11.9 avg.) and scored three touchdowns to help Clarion (9-0) defeat St. Marys 37-6 Friday night. Cathcart scored on runs of 20, 1 and 9 yards and also had two punts for 80 yards (40.0 avg.), his first two punts of the season. Cathcart now has 24 touchdowns on the season while cracking the 1,000-yd. mark rushing.

With the win, Clarion, last year's D-9 Class A runner-up, wrapped up its second-straight undefeated regular season and will host Kane in a Class A semifinal playoff game Friday, Nov. 3.
