BRADFORD RUNS AWAY WITH DISTRICT 9 CLASS AAA TITLE

BROCKWAY – Bradford (8-2) scored 34 unanswered second-half point on its way to a 48-14 win over Clearfield (7-3) and the District 9 Class AAA Championship Friday night at Brockway High School.

The Owls broke a 14-14 halftime deadlock two plays into the second half when Jason Casey scampered 54 yards giving Bradford a 20-14 lead it would never relinquish.

Bradford added one more third quarter touchdown on a 32-yard run by Elliott George and then scored three times in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Kevin Rose, a 40-yard run by Casey and a 47-yard run by George.

The win was a revenge of sorts for the Owls who lost to Clearfield 35-14 in Week One this season. It was Bradford’s first win since 1991 over Clearfield, and the Owls claimed their first District 9 Title in 12 year. The win was also Bradford’s eighth in a row this season after starting the year 0-2.

In windy and misting rain conditions, Clearfield got on the scoreboard first taking advantage of a bad snap on a Bradford punt that gave the Bison the ball at the Owls’ 20-yard line.

On fourth-and-six from the 16-yard line, Mike Sayers found Dave Richards on a 16-yard touchdown pass to give the Bison a 7-0 lead.

Bradford wasted little time tying the game, as George scored on a 51-yard run to make the score 7-7.

Clearfield, though, answered right back with a 20-yard touchdown run by Richards to take a 14-7 lead.

Bradford tied the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by Casey four plays after George ran 46 yards to the Clearfield 14-yard line.

In the second half, after Bradford had taken the 28-14 lead, Clearfield had one last chance to get back into the game driving inside the Bradford 20. The Owls’ defense, however, was able to hold Clearfield on downs at the 19-yard line basically ending the Bison night.

Bradford gained 408 yards on the night including 400 on the ground. George led the way with 184 yards rushing on eight carries and three touchdowns, while Casey had 13 carries for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

Bradford will now play the District 6 Champion at a site and time to be determined.
