BROOKVILLE -- Karns City entered its first round PIAA Class AA playoff game against Sharon as the heavy underdog, as the Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the state by the Harrisburg Patriot-News and No. 2 by the Pennsylvania Football News.

But the Gremlins (9-3) fought hard all afternoon before dropping a heart-breaking 14-6 decision to Sharon (11-1) at Brookville Saturday afternoon. The loss ended Karns City's season.

Karns City struck first on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Erik Fuhrer with 5:10 left in the first quarter to take an early 6-0 lead.

Sharon, though, answered right back on a 39-yard halfback-option touchdown pass from Terrance Phillips to Marlin Jackson 10 seconds into the second quarter, and when Jim Morocco booted the extra point the Tigers had all the points they would need.

The Tigers added a second first half touchdown with 2:39 left in the half when Mike Schneider hit Jackson with a 5-yard pass to make the score 14-6. That would be the last score for either team on this cold, winter afternoon.

Sharon ruled the stat sheet racking up 409 yards of total offense to Karns City's 179, but 18 penalties for 155 yards hurt the Tiger's cause as did two fumbles lost.

Jim Belles led the way for Karns City with 16 rushes for 127 yards. Fuhrer was 8-20 passing for 57 yards and one interception.

Carmone Parchman led Sharon with 30 rushes for 106 yards, while Phillips had three for 79 yards. Schneider was 8-20 passing for 163 yards and one touchdown. Phillips was the leading receiver with four catches for 77 yards, while Jackson had three catches for 66 yards and the two touchdowns.

Sharon now advances to the state quarterfinals next weekend at a site and time to be determined.
