WEEK 2 GAME RECAPS

SEPT. 8-9

BOBCATS BLANK UNION

By Jonathan Shaffer

CLARION- In the last edition of the PA Football News, the Clarion Area Bobcats were ranked second in the Class A state rankings.

And after the 67-0 thumping the Bobcats put on Union Friday, Sept. 8 in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference contest, it could be argued that the ranking is legit.

"It was embarrassing," Union coach Al Pryor said his team’s performance.

"That was the most embarrassed I have ever been, and I have coached football for 16 years. There is no excuse to play like that."

Clarion (2-0 KSAC) dominated in almost every statistical category.

The Bobcats held Union (1-1 KSAC) to negative yards rushing and outgained Union 286-45.

"We took away their big-play ability," Clarion coach Larry Wiser said. "We also had great field position throughout the game because of turnovers.

"At one point, I am not sure if I had ever been around a game when things were going that right. That first half just floored me over."

Clarion was able to score early and often. The Bobcats scored on their first five possessions, and the total time of possession of those five scoring drives was just 4:32.

Meanwhile, Cathcart scored offensively and defensively, registering three rushing touchdowns and returning an interception back for a score. Cathcart nearly returned another interception back, being tackled at the 1-yard line. He also led all rushers with 63 yards while not having a carry in the second half.

Clarion was relentless from the beginning, scoring 34 points in the first quarter alone.

After Union went three-and-out in the opening possession of the game, the Bobcats started their first scoring drive at their own 38.

Cathcart had the ball for the first two plays of the drive, gaining 40 and three yards respectively. The next play saw Dan Patton break free for a 19-yard touchdown run. The extra point was wide right, but Clarion possessed a 6-0 lead with 9:32 on the clock.

Clarion got the ball back when Cathcart intercepted a Brian Lipps pass at the Union 39 and returned it 38 yards to the 1-yard line with 8:04 left in the first quarter.

Cathcart then scored on a 1-yard plunge just two seconds later. Dan Kaufman’s point after gave Clarion a 13-0 lead.

Clarion scored on its next possession, which lasted only one play.

Mario Bernardi found Patton for a 28-yard touchdown with 6:21 left to further Clarion’s lead. After the PAT, the Bobcats were ahead 20-0.

Clarion got excellent field position for its next scoring drive thanks to an interception by Patton that put Clarion at the Union 14.

On the fifth play of the drive, Cathcart stormed in from a yard out with 3:28 on the clock. The PAT put Clarion up 27-0.

The situation became even bleaker for Union on the ensuing kickoff, as Union fumbled the kickoff on its own 20. Mike Corbett recovered the fumble to give Clarion great field position.

Four plays later, Cathcart blasted his way into the endzone from 13 yards outs. The point after gave Clarion a 34-0 advantage with 2:24 left in the opening frame.

Clarion’s next score was a result of a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown by Cathcart with 11:50 left in the half. Kaufman put another point after through to make the score 41-0.

Union continued to hurt its own changes by making costly mistakes. On its next possession, a bad snap on a punt attempt gave Clarion the ball at the Union 11.

Two plays later, Corbett scored on a 4-yard run. The extra point made the score 48-0.

The Bobcats scored their last touchdown of the half with 1:31 left on the clock. That is when Nick Niznik scored on a 7-yard run. This time the PAT went wide, but Clarion was up 54-0.

Clarion scored a touchdown in the final two quarters, as Ben Bevevino lit up the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter. Kaufman’s point after attempt was good to elevate the score to 61-0.

Finally, Clarion scored for the last time when Matt Allio rumbled in from a yard out with 6:05 left in the game. The two-point conversion failed, as the score remained at 67-0.

"We played a very poor game," Ray Gilman said. "We won the game, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We had several touchdowns called back because of dumb penalties. We just didn't execute our offense like we are capable of."
