WEEK 5 GAME RECAPS

SEPT. 29-30

FALCONS FALL TO KARNS CITY

Thanks to C-93 Clarion for the story.

FOXBURG- It was a homecoming in more ways than one at A-C Valley (3-2 overall, 2-2 KSAC) as the Karns City Gremlins (4-1, 4-1) invaded Foxburg and came away with a 49-6 victory.

The Falcons had their Homecoming game spoiled as former A-C Valley head coach Ed Conto returned for the first time as head coach of the Gremlins.

The Gremlins got their running game going early with "The Reverend" Billy Graham, as he went in from 33 yards at 10:02 of the first quarter.

Later in the first, Jim Belles added a 64 yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 Karns City. That was the score at the end of one quarter.

Karns City added 28 points in the second quarter.

The first score came with 8:21 left in the half when Graham scored from two yards out. A 36-yard pass from Eric Fuhrer, who replaced Ian Ferguson at starting quarterback, made the score 28-0 with 7:27 left in the first half. A 30-yard pass from Fuhrer to Belles made it 35-0 with 4:49 left in the half.

Ferguson added a 70 yard punt return to make the score 42-0 with 56 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, a 4-yard run by Beau Rattigan gave the Gremlins a 49-0 lead.

A-C Valley got its lone score with 6:46 left in the game when Chris Gilman scored from a yard out.

The Falcons started Corey Jackson at quarterback, and, aside from an early first quarter drive that stalled on the Karns City 33 yard line, the A-C Valley was not able to get the offense going.  Gilman, one of the top rushers in District 9, was held to 40 yards on 18 carries.  Dan Leach led the Falcons on the ground with 81 yards on 6 carries.

Karns City was led by Belles 95 yards on six carries, while Graham had 88 yards on seven carries. Graham had 36 yards receiving, while Belles had 30 yards receiving. Fuhrer had three completions for 72 yards.

Karns City hosts District 10 powerhouse Wilmington next Friday while the Falcons go to Keystone to take on the Panthers in a KSAC match-up.

BOBCATS LIGHT UP SCOREBOARD IN 82-0 VICTORY

By Jonathan Shaffer

RURAL VALLEY- It was a match-up between the KSAC's lone undefeated team (Clarion Area) and its only remaining winless squad (West Shamokin). The result was a score that may have possibly exceeded everyone's expectations

Clarion (5-0 overall and conference) scored 12 touchdowns, including seven rushing TD’s and three defensive scores. The Bobcats racked up 34 points in the first quarter and 68 points in the first half.

Meanwhile, West Shamokin turned the ball over eight times and let up 360 total rushing yards.

"I don’t know what to say," Clarion coach Larry Wiser said. "Everything came up right. What do you do? The first team was already done by halftime and it was the JV guys out there in the second half.

"You never go out to purposefully embarrass a team, but you can’t go out there and not play hard."

The defense, which held the Wolves (0-5 overall and conference) to 16 yards rushing and intercepted Wolves’ quarterback Ryan Van Horn five times, helped to get things going for the Bobcats.

West Shamokin got the ball to start the game. On the second play from scrimmage, Kyle Cathcart stormed through the line to hit Van Horn and cause a fumble. Ted Lawrence recovered for Clarion at the West Shamokin 10.

On the second play of the series, Cathcart scored on a 3-yard run, as Clarion built a 7-0 lead with just 52 seconds gone in the game.

Dan Patton was the next Bobcat to get on the scoresheet, taking off on a 63-yard touchdown run with 5:32 left in the first quarter.

Clarion had a 14-0 lead when Zac Mechling nabbed his first of two interceptions on the night at 5:26. Just over a minute later at 4:23, J.D. Hughes rumbled into the endzone from a yard out, as the Bobcats eventually increased its lead to 21-0.

On West Shamokin’s next possession, the Wolves fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. Nick Niznik picked up the fumble and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown at 4:12

Clarion’s next touchdown was on a defensive play as well, with Nick Keener intercepting a pass and going 20 yards into the end zone, helping Clarion take a 34-0 lead.

It turns out that Cathcart, Patton, Hughes and Keener were just warming up, as all four players scored again.

Cathcart’s second touchdown was also a rushing touchdown, taking off on a 27-yard run to help give Clarion a 41-0 lead with 10:27 left in the half.

Before Patton got on the board again, Mario Bernardi hooked up with Taylor Sessions on a 10-yard touchdown pass at the 5:24 mark.

Then Patton scored his second touchdown just 16 seconds after the Sessions score by returning an interception 19 yards for a touchdown.

Patton scored his team-high third TD of the game just over two minutes later, running to glory on a 25-yard run that helped to make the game 61-0 with 2:29 left in the first half.

Keener got back into the scoring act just before halftime, hauling in an 18-yard pass from Ben Bevevino. Dan Kaufman’s eighth point after of the half made the score 68-0 going into halftime.

In the third frame of action, Hughes became the fourth Bobcat of the evening to score at least two touchdowns when he went off on a 72-yard touchdown run.

And if Hughes’ touchdown wasn’t enough icing on an already saturated cake, reserve running back Dustin Shaffer found a seam and traveled 59 yards for Clarion’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"I was hiding my head by that point," Wiser said. "That was just a run up the middle there. That was our third-team offense that scored.

"I was impressed (about team’s performance). I got to be kind of humbly impressed because the last you want to do as a coach is destroy another team. You are in this to help kids."
