OCT.6-7

BROCKWAY'S AARON CANTAFIO BELIEVED TO HAVE BROKEN D-9 RUSHING MARK

BROCKWAY -- With 240 yards rushing in Brockway's 28-14 win over Ridgway Friday night, Brockway's Aaron Cantafio is believed to have broken the District 9 rushing mark set last year by DuBois' Justin Marshall.

Cantafio now has 3,640 yards rushing in his career, the most by any known District 9 runner. He only needs 360 yards to break the 4,000-yard career mark, a mark that is believed to never have been reached in the district.

In addition to his 240 yards rushing, Cantafio scored two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion in helping the Rovers (5-1) defeat the Elkers (4-2).

Brockway built a 22-0 halftiome lead then held off a Ridgway rally that saw the Elkers score 14 third-quarter points to get the win. The game was still in doubt until Cantafio scored from 13 yards out with 11 seconds left in the game.

Jesse Vivian added 20 carries for 92 yards, and Mike Greco had 15 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

BOBCATS TROUNCE WARRIORS

By Chris Rossetti

CLARION – For the second straight week, Clarion’s offense more resembled that of a basketball team rather than of a football team, as the Bobcats (6-0 overall, 6-0 KSAC) scored on eight of their 14 first-half possessions on the way to a 62-6 win over Moniteau (2-4, 2-4) Friday night at Clarion.

This win came on the heels of Clarion 82-0 win at West Shamokin last week. The Bobcats are now averaging 53.5 points per game while allowing just 2.2 points per game.

"We had a great week of practice offensively," Clarion head coach Larry Wiser said. "The intensity was there in practice this week."

The Bobcats, ranked No. 2 in Class A by the Pennsylvania Football News, racked up 488 yards 390 on its way to the win. The Bobcats had 346 yards on the ground and 142 in the air.

"I thought our offense was diversified enough in the fact that we were able to run in and out and get the ball over the top," Wiser said. "And that is as good as we have thrown the ball in a long time."

Clarion’s defense held Moniteau to 100 of total offense, including just eight in the air. The Bobcats held Moniteau Bill Staab, who rushed for 282 yards a week ago against Redbank Valley to just 62 yards on 30 carries including 28 yards on 8 carries in the fourth quarter.

"I thought they had a very similar offense to what C-L was running, which is basically Clarion University’s offense," Wiser said. "It required us to be really disciplined at the linebacker position and for our linemen to take their gaps. There was no question that other than Moniteau’s first series our defense played well."

The only negative, if you could call it that, for Clarion (6-0 overall, 6-0 KSAC) was that Moniteau’s first team scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter against Clarion’s junior varsity defense, the first touchdown the Bobcats have allowed in 22 quarters. The streak lasted 284 minutes, and 42 seconds and included four shutouts.

"There is no question that the right thing to do was to keep our JV in there," Wiser said. "It would have been nice to keep that streak alive, but I will use it as a teaching tool for our kids that were in there and hopefully it will make us a better football team."

Clarion wasted little time getting on the scoreboard scoring on its first offensive play of the game when Kyle Cathcart went 69 yards for the touchdown. Dan Kaufman’s extra point gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead with 8:15 left in the first half.

After a Moniteau punt, Clarion took over on its own 28-yard line. Once again it took the Bobcats only one play to score as Mario Bernardi hit Taylor Sessions for a 72-yard touchdown pass that gave Clarion a 14-0 lead with 5:50 left in the opening quarter.

Taking over at the Moniteau 32 after another punt, it took Clarion two plays to score its next touchdown. The score came on a 29-yard ruin by J.D. Hughes that made the score 21-0 with 3:324 left in the first quarter. Zac Mechling paved the way for Hughes score with a great block on the Moniteau cornerback.

Clarion had one more score left in it in the first quarter, as Bernardi hit Dan Patton for a 26-yard scoring pass with 18 seconds left in the quarter. Kaufman missed the point after, but Clarion led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter.

After forcing a Moniteau punt early in the second quarter, Clarion used two plays to score its fifth touchdown of the night.

This time it was a 38-yard run up the middle by Mike Corbett one play after he went down the sideline for 17 yards. Kaufman’s extra point gave the Bobcats a 34-0 lead.

After forcing another Moniteau punt, Clarion needed one play to strike again. Bernardi hit Zac Mechling with a 44-yard scoring strike giving Clarion a 41-0 lead with 7:41 left in the first half.

Bernardi was perfect on the night completing 3-for-3 for 142 yards and three touchdowns.

"Our passing game is something we have been focusing on the last couple of weeks," Bernardi said. "We made big strides during practice this week and got the job down."

"There’s no question Mario played a great game tonight," Wiser said. "And Taylor and Danny and Zac made some great cathces on those passes. But Mario put the ball right in there. That is as good as I have seen anyone throw that deep ball in a long time."

Three-and-a-half minutes latter Clarion scored again when Cathcart went 38 yards for a touchdown giving the Bobcats a 48-0 lead with 4:24 left in the half.

Cathcart finished the game with 110 yards rushing on three carries and two touchdowns.

"Kyle makes that break to the outside and just outruns people," Wiser said. "On at least one if not both of his touchdowns, people had angles on him, and he just took it up the sideline past them."

Moniteau finally found a way to stop Clarion on its next possession, as Bernardi fumbled and the Warriors recovered at their own 46.

Clarion’s defense got the ball back four plays latter, though, as Pat Rumbaugh fumbled at the Moniteau 33-yard line, and Clarion’s Nick Niznik recovered the ball at that spot with 19 seconds left in the half.

Clarion tried to run the clock out by handing the ball to Brock Luke up the middle. Luke, however, was able to bounce the play outside and score on a 33-yard touchdown run. Luke’s score gave the Bobcats a 55-0 lead at halftime.

With the mercy rule in effect and the clock running, the third quarter went by in 12 minutes. Clarion kept the ball on the ground with its JV offense with Matt Allio running for

The Clarion reserves got into the offense fireworks with 10:48 left in the game when quarterback Ben Bevevino rolled out from the Moniteau 5-yard line and score Clarion’s last touchdown making the score 62-0.

Moniteau finally broke through with 1:18 left in the game, as its first team offense scored against Clarion’s JV defense. Joe Hetherington got the score on a 30-yard carry on fourth-and-25 from the Clarion 30.

The Bobcats’ Sessions appeared to take the ensuing kickoff back 83 yards for a score, but a push in the back brought it back. Clarion then downed the ball running out the clock.

Moniteau was led by Staab’s 62 yards, while Hetherington had 35 yards and the score.

The Warrior’s quarterback Jason Frederick was 2-of-9 for 8 yards.

C-L HOLDS OFF REDBANK VALLEY

NEW BETHLEHEM -- Clarion-Limestone built a 17-7 lead through three quarters and held on to beat Redbank Valley 17-13 Friday night at Redbank Valley.

"It was one of our better wins of the season," C-L coach Clyde Conti said. "Redbank is a pretty good football team when they have all of their weapons. To go down to Redbank for their homecoming and with the emotions running high and to come out of there with a win, I'm real happy."

The Bulldogs (2-4 overall, 2-3 KSAC)) were boosted by the return of Matt Shealy, who had missed the first five games with a spleen injury, while C-L (5-1 overall, 4-1 KSAC) got a lift from the return of Dan Alderton, who had missed last week's game with a concussion. But Alderton played sparingly in the second half.

"Shealy played really well for them," Conti said. "He made some excellent plays and really gave them a boost."

Despite Alderton's return, C-L was without the services of Chad Conti (concussion), Mike Reynolds (concussion) and Jason Thompson (leg).

"We turned in a gutty performance," Conti said. "We had a lot of guys hurt and had different guys coming in and out of the game. At one point, we had four freshmen playing out there.

Redbank Valley scored when Chris Merwin hit Shealy with a five-yard pass that gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead five seconds into the second quarter.

C-L tied the game 13 seconds latter when J.J. Ferguson hit Justin McKissick with an 80-yard pass.

A Rocky Davis field goal from 22 yards out gave C-L a 10-7 lead with 7:17 left in the first half.

Redbank had a chance to tie the game late in the first half, but Dustin Shaffer missed from 37 yards out leaving C-L ahead 10-7 at halftime.

The Lions made the score 17-7 when Brad Beggs hit Ryan Smith with a 63-yard TD strike.

Redbank made a game out of it when Merwin hit Shealy from 17 yards out to make the score 17-13.

Ferguson went 4-8 for 89 yards and the score for C-L, while Dan Alderton rushed 19 times for 82 yards, Ryan Smith had two catches for 64 yards and the score.

Shealy had 6 catches for 95 yards and two scores. Merwin went 10 of 24 passing  for 182 yards and two TD's.

Ron Geist led the Redbank Valley running game with 110 yards on 21 carries.

KNOX- Billy Colwell scored on a 16-yard run with seven seconds left in the game to lift Keystone to a stunning 32-28 win over A-C Valley.

Trailing 28-26 with 1:08 left, the Panthers (2-4 overall, 2-3 KSAC) started their game-winning scoring drive around midfield. Adam Black, who went 18-of-32 passing for 230 yards and threw three touchdowns, drove Keystone to the Falcons 16-yard line to set up the Caldwell TD.

A-C Valley (3-3 overall, 3-3 KSAC) had leads of 16-0, 22-18 and 28-26.

The Falcons built their 16-0 lead as quarterback Cory Jackson, who was filling in for an injured Mike Stewart (shoulder), scored on a 4-yard run and hooked up with Josh Kriebel on a 38-yard TD pass. Chris Gilman ran in both two-point conversions.

KARNS CITY- Karns City held Wilmington, ranked 10th in Class AAA by the PA Football News, and who came into the game averaging 45.2 points a game, to just a third-quarter field goal.
