COUDERSPORT HEADS TO SMETHPORT LOOKING FOR FIRST REGULAR SEASON WIN AGAINST HUBBERS SINCE 1988 |
Coudersport (3-1 overall, 3-1 AML North) at Smethport (2-2, 2-2) |
Week Five - 7:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 27 |
SMETHPORT – The Coudersport Falcons fly into Smethport
Friday night looking for their first win against the Hubbers since 1988.
As good as the Falcons, who did beat Smethport in the District 9 championship game in 1994, have been the last two seasons going a combined 16-5 in 2000 and 2001, they have yet to solve the Hubber puzzle losing 32-6 last season and 14-0 in 2000. Coudersport is on its way to what looks like another good season with a 3-1 start, while Smethport has struggled a bit and are standing at 2-2. The Falcons are using a high-powered offense in 2002 averaging 26.5 points per game and a tough defense that is allowing just 9.75 points per game. Last week the Falcons beat Port Allegany 39-0. Coudersport is led by quarterback Ben Cary (22-for-67, 418 yards, 5 touchdowns, 4 interceptions) and running back Zach Hershey (4.6 yards per carry, 6 touchdowns). Offense has not been a problem for Smethport. They are averaging 29.5 points per game and that number goes up to 37 points per game if a 20-7 loss in Week One to Elk County Catholic is taken out. Defensively, the Hubbers are allowing 13.75 points per game, and last week they defeated Otto-Eldred 52-6. Most of Smethport’s offensive damage has come on the ground where the Hubbers are averaging 228.75 yards per game. They are averaging 69.75 yards per game through the air. Quarterback Mike Mitchell has run 51 times for 353 yards and seven touchdowns while going 10-for-29 passing for 112 yards and two interceptions. He has also caught four passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Andy Rounsville is adding 141 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Ben Rothermel has rushed 17 times for 125 yards and three scores. Rounsville has chipped in two catches for 84 yards and a score. Next week Smethport travels to Eisenhower while Coudersport is on the road at Otto-Eldred. |
