WEEK EIGHT PREVIEW STORIES

Oct. 18-19

By Chris Rossetti

NEW BETHLEHEM – The leaves have started to turn colors. There is a chill in the air. And darkness descends upon Western Pennsylvania earlier each day. It must mean that it is late fall and that means we are almost at playoff time.

There are just two weeks to go in the 2002 football regular season, and in most cases the playoff picture has cleared considerably.

In Class A, three of the four playoff teams are set with a battle for the final spot between three teams: Ridgway-Redbank Valley and Keystone.

All three of those teams are in action Friday night with Keystone visiting Redbank Valley and Ridgway hosting Cameron County. The third big game of the week takes place in the D9 League where Brookville hosts Punxsutawney with both teams currently tied for first place with 3-1 records. Full-game previews on those games can be found by clicking on the links below. Previews from the remainder of the games right below the links.

But now we go back to the playoffs.

First in Class A starting in the KSAC.

Clarion-Limestone will finish the season with the best record among Class A schools and therefore gets the KSAC’s automatic bid. The Lions can finish no worse than 6-2 while Keystone and Redbank Valley can finish no better than 6-2. C-L holds the tiebreaker over both schools thanks to beating both of them.

In the AML, the AML title game is set between Coudersport and Kane with the winner gaining the AML’s automatic berth. The loser is still in because even if that team loses this week and finishes 6-2, it still will have enough Gardner Points to qualify ahead of Redbank Valley or Keystone, although Ridgway could wind up with more Gardner Points than Coudersport.

That brings us to the fourth and final Class A playoff spot. Basically three teams are fighting for that spot: Ridgway, Redbank Valley and Keystone, although two straight losses by Coudersport would technically put them in the mix even though they have already clinched a berth.

In the Ridgway-Redbank-Keystone scenario, the Elkers will make the playoffs if they beat Cameron County by three points or more. A Ridgway win by two points opens the door for Keystone. The Panthers would then need to beat Redbank Valley and Clarion by at least 10 points each to create a Gardner Point tie. Or A Ridgway win by one points, and two Keystone wins by 10 or more points would put the Panthers in the playoffs and leave the Elkers on the outside looking in. A one-point win by Ridgway and wins of 9 points and 10 or more points by Keystone would also create a tie. There is no tiebreaker system, but a couple of alternatives have been talked about including a coin flip and a tiebreaker game held early in the week before the playoffs. A tiebreaker game was played between Ridgway and Coudersport on the Tuesday before the playoffs in 1999 with Ridgway winning 14-0.

A Ridgway loss would open the door for either Keystone or Redbank Valley to make the playoffs. If either Redbank or Keystone wins out and Ridgway loses, the Keystone-Redbank winner would be in the playoffs. Redbank Valley can only make the playoffs with a Ridgway loss.

Now what happens if Ridgway loses but neither Keystone nor Redbank Valley wins out? Chaos is the answer. This could bring a number of teams back into the playoff picture with three loses including Curwensville and Port Allegany along with Ridgway, Keystone and Redbank Valley.

Things are a little clearer and a lot simpler in Class AA and Class AAA.

In Class AA, four teams still have a shot at playing in the postseason including Karns City (6-1), Brookville (4-3), Brockway (4-3) and Moniteau (3-4).

A Karns City win this week would assure the Gremlins the top seed, which could mean a bye if only three teams are in the playoffs or a home game in the first round if four teams are in it.

Brookville and Brockway are still battling it out for the second seed with the final two weeks of the season meaning a lot to both teams. The second seed will get to host a first-round playoff game. The real question in Class AA is whether or not Moniteau is going to participate in the playoffs. Last season, the Moniteau school board decided the Warriors needed to be above .500 if they wanted to compete in the postseason. In order for Moniteau to finish the regular season above .500 it needs to beat Clarion-Limestone this week and Pymatuning Valley (Ohio) next week. But then again the school board could decided the let the Warriors go to the playoffs if they finish 4-5.

Class AAA could be a very interesting playoff. Three teams look to be in the mix for the postseason: Clearfield (5-2), Punxsutawney (5-2) and Bradford (3-4).

Clearfield holds the tiebreaker over Punxsutawney for the top spot by virtue of beating the Chucks, but if the Bisons lose again and Punxsy runs the table the Chucks could get the top seed. Thanks to their wins over Bradford, Punxsutawney and Clearfield have secured at least the No. 2 spot. Bradford, though, could be a darkhorse team for the title. The Owls started the year 0-4 but have rebounded to win three in a row and a couple of more wins could put them as the hottest team entering the playoffs.

Sheffield beat Smethport 14-0

GAME STORY

  • Coudersport clinched the AML North title last week and will play Kane in the AML Title game next week. It is Coudersport’s first ever appearance in the AML Title game. Since a Week Two loss to Eisenhower, the Falcons have been on a roll scoring 33.8 ppg while going 5-0.
  • Sheffield broke a two-game losing steak last week with the win over Smethport. The Wolverines can match last year’s 5-4 record with back-to-back wins to close out the season

COUDERSPORT LEADERS

RB Zack Hershey (693 yards, 16 touchdowns), QB Ben Cary (53-116, 844 yards, 7 TDs, 3 Ints)

WHERE

Russell

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Otto-Eldred lost to Elk County Catholic 40-0

Eisenhower lost to Port Allegany 21-0

GAME STORY

  • Otto-Eldred is still in search of win No. 1 in 2002 and their first win since 1999, 26 games ago. The senior class is trying to avoid becoming the first senior class since the 1930’s not to win a football game in its three years of high school. The Terrors do have the services of quarterback Joey Drake back which could provide a lift.
  • Two weeks ago Eisenhower had dreams of an AML Title and a berth in the District 10 playoffs. Two straight losses have knocked the Knights from their pedestal. A couple of wins to close out the season would still allow them to finish on a high note with a 6-3 mark. WR Ryan Irwin has not had a catch the past two weeks, and may not have played in either game. His status is unknown

OTTO-ELDRED LEADERS

QB Joey Drake (15-43, 237 yards, 3 TDs, 4 INTs), WR Josh Barnish

EISENHOWER LEADERS

QB Jacoby Curtis (50-108, 802 yards, 7 TDs, 9 Ints), WR Ryan Irwin (24 6yards, 2 TDs), RB Eric Sirianni (258 yards, 2 TDs), WR Bart Moon (11 catches, 223 yards, 1 TD)

NEXT WEEK

Otto-Eldred is at Johnsonburg Friday

Eisenhower hosts Cameron County Friday

Port Allegany (4-3 overall, 4-3 AML North) at Youngsville (2-5, 2-5)

WHERE

Youngsville

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Port Allegany beat Smethport 21-0

Youngsville lost to Coudersport 35-6

GAME STORY

  • Port Allegany is on a roll having won three in a row after starting the season 1-3. Unfortunately for the Gators they are playing in Class A where in the current 4-team system 3 losses is one too many to make the playoffs. Port might still have a long-shot chance if Ridgway, Redbank Valley and Keystone each lose one more game to create a 5-way tie of teams at 5-3. The Gators defense has been a big reason for their recent success. The "D" has allowed just 19 points in the past three weeks after being torched for 104 in the first four weeks.
  • Youngsville’s season started out on what looked like a promising note at 2-1, but the Eagles have fallen on hard times losing four in a row while scoring just 36 points in the four games. The fast start might have been a mirage considering Youngsville played Otto-Eldred and Johnsonburg, two teams with a combined 2-12 record.

PORT ALLEGANY LEADERS

RB’s Adam Rohrer (602 yards, 6 TDS) & Claude Haskins (315 yards, 1 TD; 19 catches, 161 yards), QB Craig Flint (47-101, 638 yards, 7 TDs, 7 Ints), WR Jeremy Niece (212 yards, 2 TDs)

YOUNGSVILLE LEADERS

QB/RB/WR Jamie Blum (11 catches, 245 yards, 4 TDs; 16-36 passing, 198 yards, 3 Ints; 406 yards rushing, 2 TDs), QB/WR Andy Chase (24-84, 430 yards, 6 TDs, 13 Ints; 6 catches, 112 yards)

NEXT WEEK

Port Allegany hosts Elk County Catholic Saturday

Youngsville hosts Brockway Friday

AML SOUTH

Brockway (4-3 overall, 4-3 AML South) at Elk County Catholic (3-4, 3-4)

WHERE

St. Marys

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Brockway lost to Kane 30-13

Elk County Catholic beat Otto-Eldred 40-0

GAME STORY

  • Brockway came into the season with high hopes of winning the AML South title, but three losses in the last four weeks have tarnished a 3-0 start. The Rovers are now playing for seeding in the D9 Class AA playoffs and a win is a must. Brockway’s offense has been the problem during the slide scoring only 13.3 ppg.
  • Elk County Catholic has gotten onto a bit of a roll winning two in a row after dropping four straight. A lot of the reason is the Crusaders’ defense which has allowed only 12 points in the past two games. ECC still has time to finish the season with a winning record, so look for the Crusaders to come out fired up in their final home game of the year.

BROCKWAY LEADERS

Wide receiver Tom Bussard (20 catches, 375 yards, 2 TDs), QB John Himes (48-98, 652 yards, 5 TDs, 7 Ints), RBs Jon Cantafio (306 yards, 3 TDs) & Jeremy Sickeri (530 yards, 4 TDs)

ELK CO. CATH. LEADERS

RBs Shane Funair (451 yards, 5 TDs) & Ted Cherry (501 yards, 3 TDs), QB Bob Pearsall (34-83, 368 yards, 1 TD, 8 Ints), wide receiver Matt Eckert (17 catches, 156 yards)

NEXT WEEK

Brockway is at Youngsville Friday

Elk County Catholic is at Port Allegany Saturday

Curwensville (4-3 overall, 4-3 AML South) at Johnsonburg (2-5, 2-5)

WHERE

Johnsonburg

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Curwensville lost to Ridgway 26-20, 2 overtimes

Johnsonburg beat Cameron County 7-0

GAME STORY

  • Last week’s double overtime loss to Ridgway all but eliminated the Golden Tide from the playoffs. Barring a miracle, Curwensville will be sitting at home for the first time in three years come the postseason. It will also be interesting to see how the Golden Tide bounce back from such a disappointing loss.
  • Johnsonburg’s record might be a tad deceiving. The Rams could very easily be 4-3 having dropped an overtime decision to Youngsville and a two-point game to Elk County Catholic. Last week Johnsonburg surprised many by upsetting Cameron County in Emporium.

CURWENSVILLE LEADERS

RB’s Brooks Collins (520 yards, 1 TD) & Doug Swatsworth (351 yards, 1 TD), QB Travis McDonald (31-64, 433 yards, 7 TDs, 10 Ints), WR Greg Gilbert (13 catches, 313 yards, 5 TDs)

JOHNSONBURG LEADERS

WR Eric Iorfido (23 catches, 385 yards, 3 TDs), QB Greg Wonderly (56-137, 787 yards, 5 TDs, 13 Ints), RB Quentin Shreffler (274 yards, 3 TDs)

NEXT WEEK

Curwensville is at Sheffield Saturday

Johnsonburg is at Otto-Eldred Friday

AML CROSSOVER

Smethport (3-4 overall, 3-4 AML North) at Kane (6-1, 6-1 AML South)

WHERE

Kane

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Smethport lost to Sheffield 14-0

Kane beat Brockway 30-13

GAME STORY

  • It has been a tough season in Hubberville where Smethport has been very inconsistent with a young team never winning or losing more than one game in a row. The Hubbers hope the trend continues Friday night at Kane with a win following last week’s loss. A win is imperative if Smethport wants to avoid its first losing season since 1980 when it went 3-5-1. The four losses are already the most for a Smethport teams since the 1986 squad finished 5-4.
  • Kane wrapped up its second District 9 playoff berth and its first AML South title with the win at Brockway Friday night. The Wolves will be playing in the AML title game for the first time next week against Coudersport. The key to the Brockway win was a 23-point third quarter that erased a 13-0 halftime deficit.
  • The last time Kane and Smethport met was in Week One of the 2000 season. That game featured one of the wackiest endings in recent D9 history. With 41 seconds to go the Hubbers took a 27-20 lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Dan Mitchell. But Royce Novosel-Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown with 28 seconds to play. Kane elected to go for the win and sophomore quarterback Tyler Smith hit sophomore Mike Jamerson with a 2-point conversion pass giving the Wolves the 28-27 win. The game ended up being a key contest, as Kane made the D9 playoffs for the first time ever while Smethport missed them for the first time since 1993

SMETHPORT LEADERS

QB/WR Mike Mitchell (634 yards rushing, 10 TDs; 16-53 passing 189 yards, 4 Ints), QB Craig Kandare (12-34, 237, 2 TDs, 4 Ints)

KANE LEADERS

QB Tyler Smith (65-116, 737 yards, 7 TDs, 6 Ints; 157 yards rushing, 4 TDs), running backs Matt Burton (258, 4 TDs) & Mike Jamerson (391 yards, 8 TDs), WRs Tim Smith (166 yards, 1 TD) & Hugh Rich (223 yards, 2 TDs)

NEXT WEEK

Smethport hosts Ridgway Friday

Kane plays Coudersport in the AML Title Game Saturday at a time and place to be determined.

D9 LEAGUE

St. Marys (2-5 overall, 1-3 D9 League) at Clearfield (5-2, 2-1)

WHERE

Clearfield

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

St. Marys lost to Punxsutawney 43-14

Clearfield beat Bald Eagle Area 49-7

GAME STORY

  • The Dutch are trying to salvage what has been another tough season. Their only wins have come over DuBois and A-C Valley, teams with a combined 0-12 record.
  • Clearfield is on a roll. After starting the season a disappointing 1-2, the Bisons have run off four straight wins. Running back Dave Richards is a big reason why. During the four-game winning streak Richards has run for 1,131 yards (282.8 yards per game) while scoring 19 rushing touchdowns and 21 overall touchdowns. He has accounted for 68.5 percent of Clearfield’s points during that span (126 of 184) and is a big reason why the Bisons are averaging 46 ppg during the streak. A Bisons win coupled with a Punxsy win over Brookville would put Clearfield in the driver’s seat for the D9 League title. Clearfield has shared the title the past two seasons with Bradford and DuBois.

ST. MARYS LEADERS

WR Lopaka Hoolihil (12 catches, 199 yards, 3 TDs), QB Brandon Bennett (30-75, 362 yards, 4 TDs, 5 Ints), RB Doug Surra (669 yards, 6 TDs)

CLEARFIELD LEADERS

RB Dave Richards (1,507 yards, 23 TDs, 214 yards receiving, 1 TD), QB Michael Sayers (47-92, 610 yards, 3 TDs, 2 Ints)

NEXT WEEK

St. Marys hosts Philipsburg-Osceola

Clearfield is at DuBois Friday

KEYSTONE SHORTWAY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Clarion (3-4 overall, 2-4 KSAC) at A-C Valley (0-7, 0-7)

WHERE

Foxburg

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Clarion beat Moniteau 40-6

A-C Valley lost to Keystone 31-7

GAME STORY

  • Clarion’s offense had a flashback to 1999-2001 last week scoring by far its most points of the season in the win over Moniteau. The 40 points was nearly half the points Clarion had scored all season going into the game (78). Quarterback Jamie Arner threw four touchdown passes in the game, which is believed to be a school record. The most surprising aspect of Clarion’s win was that it came a week after the Bobcats dropped an 8-6 decision to West Shamokin and a week after two of Clarion’s starters ( linemen Marty Fisher and Jon Byers) quite the team. Clarion was also without the services of starting RB/LB Dave Larson in the second half b/c of a hand injury. Larson’s status for Friday is unknown.
  • If it wasn’t for Otto-Eldred’s 26-game slide, A-C Valley would hold the distinction for the longest losing streak in District 9. The once high-flying Falcon program that appeared in back-to-back D9 Class AAA championship games just a couple of years ago has lost 12 games in a row. The Falcons are also in search of their first win over Clarion since a 22-6 decision in 1998 and only their second win over the Bobcats since 1986. Clarion leads the overall series 24-4.

CLARION LEADERS

WR Will Lewis (15 catches, 160 yards, 4 TDs), WB Jason Reed (15 catches, 270 yards, 2 TDs; 221 yards rushing), RB Dave Larson (386 yards, 1 TD), FB Ambrogio Giambanco (169 yards, 1 TD), RB Corey Corbett (205 yards, 1 TD), QB Jamie Arner (37-91, 491 yards, 7 TDs, 12 Ints)

A-C VALLEY LEADERS

QB Corey Clawson (19-52, 270 yards, 1 TD, 5 Ints; 172 yards rushing, 2 TDs), RB Brad Hurrelbrink (274 yards, 1 TD; 143 yards receiving, 1 TD), RB Zack Heeter (230 yards)

NEXT WEEK

Clarion hosts Keystone Friday

A-C Valley is at Clarion-Limestone Friday

Moniteau (3-4 overall, 3-4 KSAC) at Clarion-Limestone (7-0, 6-0)

WHERE

Strattanville

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Moniteau lost to Clarion 40-6

Clarion-Limestone beat Redbank Valley 45-7

GAME STORY

  • Moniteau has lost three straight since starting the year 3-1. The Warriors probably need to win their final two games if they want their school board to allow them to compete in the D9 Class AA playoffs.
  • C-L clinched a D9 Class A playoff berth with the win over Redbank Valley last week. The Lions are one of the top scoring teams in the state averaging 42.3 ppg and one of the better defensive teams as well allowing only 4.9 ppg. The 7 points put up by Redbank Valley last week in the first quarter where the first points scored on C-L in 15 quarters dating back to the first quarter of the West Shamokin game in Week Three. The Lions had delivered three straight shutouts prior to the score. C-L can also clinch a share of the KSAC title with a win, and two wins or a Karns City loss would give the title outright to the Lions. There is no tiebreaker if Karns City and C-L would tie for the top spot and both teams would be declared co-champions despite the Lions having beaten the Gremlins.

MONITEAU LEADERS

RB Steve Saul (326 yards, 3 TDs), QB Clay Kohlmeyer (37-109, 480 yards, 3 TDs, 12 Ints), WR Pat Rumbaugh (226 yards, 1 TD, 3 kicks for TDs)

C-L LEADERS

QB Hayden Johnston (30-62, 505 yards, 10 TDs, 2 Ints; 490 yards rushing, 6 TDs), RB Brendan Huwar (599 yards, 15 TDs), FB Ben Brooks (692 yards, 5 TDs), WR Brad Beggs (20 catches, 327 yards, 7 TDs)

NEXT WEEK

WHERE

Karns City

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Union beat West Shamokin 20-6

Karns City beat Central Mountain 35-16

GAME STORY

  • Union has showed improved play under first-year head coach Scott Kindel. The Golden Knights, though, have had trouble putting points on the board scoring in double digits in just two of their seven games.
  • Karns City is on a roll having won six straight since losing to C-L in Week One. The Gremlins have their sights set on a fourth straight D9 Class AA title and can claim the top seed, which could come with a bye, with a win.

UNION LEADERS

QB Adam Milanovich (33-84, 432 yards, 3 TDs, 9 Ints), RBs Devon Kriebal (208 yards, 2 TDs) & Dennis Shay (361 yards), WR Darren Laughlin 9 catches, 189 yards, 4 TDs), TE Jon McKinney (10 catches, 156 yards)

KARNS CITY LEADERS

RB Matt Carnahan (874 yards, 18 TDs), QB Erik Fuhrer (53-102, 723 yards, 3 TDs, 3 Ints; 125 yards rushing, 3 TDs), WRs Nate Wilson (11 catches, 236 yards, 1 TD), Noll Steiner (20 catches, 248 yards, 2 TDs)

Bellefonte (3-4) at Bradford (3-4)

WHERE

Bradford

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Bellefonte beat Lewistown 19-0

Bradford beat DuBois 21-10

GAME STORY

  • The Woodchucks started the season 2-0 but lost four straight before winning last week. Three of the loses have been heart breakers with two coming by 7 points and one by a single points (15-14 against Indian Valley). The only blowout loss for Bellefonte was a 45-13 licking put on by Clearfield Sept. 27. Bellefonte’s team is about defense. The Woodchucks are allowing just 14.6 ppg but they are scoring just 14.7 ppg. More information on Bellefonte football can be found at http://www.woodshedfootball.com/
  • Bradford has won three straight since losing its first four games. The difference has been an improved offense that has scored 82 points during the winning streak after posting just 59 in the first four weeks. The offense has needed to be good, because the defense has yet to allow an opponent under 10 points in a game and is allowing an average of 27.4 ppg.

BELLEFONTE LEADERS

Running back Corey Mislinski, quarterback Josh Mundy and wide receiver Ryan Smeltzer

BRADFORD LEADERS

RBs Brandon LaBrozzi (318 yards, 3 TDs,) Shawn Colligan (420 yards, 7 TDs; 182 yards receiving), Sean Hvizdzak (405 yards, 5 TDs), QB Jake Long (22-46, 3777, 2 Tds, 5 Ints)

Oil City

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

DuBois lost to Bradford 21-10

Oil City beat Brookville 22-13

GAME STORY

  • DuBois is in serious jeopardy of not winning a game for the first time in school history in a season that has gone over five games. The previous low water mark for the Beavers was 1961 when they were 1-8-1. It has been a tough road to hoe for third-year head coach Lon Hazlett. After having so much success at Karns City, Hazlett has gone 9-19 in his first three seasons in DuBois.
  • Oil City is from District 10. The Oilers are a predominately rushing team that relies on the ground (223.2 yards per game) and a strong defense (11.3 ppg) to win games. Although last week against Brookville they showed they could pass the ball as well. More information on Oil City football can be found at http://members.tripod.com/ocpafootball/

DUBOIS LEADERS

RBs Justin Foltz (293 yards, 1 TD) & Vance Newell (257 yards, 1 TD), QB Jon Wanson (31-85, 354 yards, 2 TDs, 9 Ints), WRs Ryan Samanka (10 catches, 146 yards) & Mark Jones (219 yards, 1 TD)

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Meadville beat Erie East 67-28

West Shamokin lost to Union 20-6

GAME STORY

  • Meadville finally got into the win column last week and did it with an offensive showing like none seen in Meadville in a long time. The 67 points double the points scored by the Bulldogs in their first six games. Going into the game they were averaging 11.2 ppg. Special teams had a lot to do with the 67 points scoring three touchdowns (2 punt returns, 1 kickoff return). Thanks to the outburst they are now averaging 19.1 ppg. Defense is another story, The 28 points allowed to Erie East kept with a trend this season. The Bulldogs are allowing 28.9 ppg and have not held an opponent under 24 points all season. The Bulldogs run a Wing-T offense highlighted by three talented tailbacks Charles McDonald, Josh Drachup and Brandon Schreffler. More information on Meadville can be found at http://www.meadvillebulldogs.com
  • After posting 38 points in the first two weeks, West Shamokin has had trouble scoring. In the past five the Wolves have scored only 38 points and have not gotten into double digits. The Wolves are averaging 215.2 total yards per game.

MEADVILLE LEADERS

FB Brandon Schreffler (90 carries, 512 yards, 6 TDs), HBs Charles McDonald (74 carries, 420 yards, 2 TDs – returned a kick & a punt for TDs last week) & Josh Drachup (52 carries, 377 yards, 4 TDs – 14 carries, 172 yards, 4 TDs last week), QB Joe Bennett (14-for-56, 336 yards, 2 TDs, 4 Ints
