KARNS CITY – Karns City scored early and often in taking
care of Moniteau 69-23 in the District 9 Class AA semifinals Friday night
at Karns City.
The Gremlins (9-1), who have won nine straight games, led 21-0 at the end of the first half and 50-0 at halftime. The Gremlins built the lead to 57-0 at the end of three quarters before Moniteau (4-6) outscored Karns City 23-12 in the final period. Mike Stitt scored three first-half touchdowns for Karns City, while Matt Carnahan scored twice. Erik Fuhrer threw two touchdowns passes. Karns City outgained Moniteau 437 yards to 185 on the night. "Our offensive line played very well," Karns City head coach Ed Conto said. "They were the difference in the game." Carnahan rushed 14 times for 161 yards, while Stitt added 58 yards. Josh Fiscus also rushed for 58 yards on just four carries and scored a touchdown. Fuhrer was 5-for-13 passing for 89 yards. For Moniteau, Ryan Rumbaugh rushed 13 times for 42 yards, while Clay Kohlmeyer was 4-for-6 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown. Garth Kohlmeyer was 1-for-2 passing for 56 yards and a score and also returned a fumble for a touchdown. Karns City scored one minute into the game on a 20-yard run by Stitt. Stitt then scored on a 29-yard run with 9:38 left in the first quarter. Carnahan closed out the first-quarter scoring on a 24-yard run with 5:10 left in the period. In the second quarter, a 10-yard run by Carnahan three seconds into the quarter made it 29-0. A 6-yard run by Stitt at the 5:28 mark made it 36-0, and a 48-yard run by Fiscus made it 43-0. The final score of the half came on a 24-yard pass from Fuhrer to David Black with 1:02 left in the half. With the Mercy Rule in effect for the entire second half, Karns City scored in the third quarter on a 24-yard pass from Fuhrer to Nate Wilson with 3:08 left in the quarter. Moniteau finally hit pay dirt with 8:14 left in the game when Pat Rumbaugh caught a 4-yard pass from Clay Kohlmeyer. But Karns City answered back with an 18-yard run by Jake Sweeney. The Warriors scored again with 3:05 left in the game on a 56-yard pass from Garth Kohlmeyer to Eric Hilliard. Garth Kohlmeyer then returned a fumble 38 yards for a score with 46 seconds left in the game to close out the scoring. Karns City will play Brockway either Friday or Saturday in the District 9 Class AA title game. It is the third straight year the two teams have met in the championship game.
