WEST MIDDLESEX RALLIES TO BEAT EISENHOWER IN D10 CLASS A TITLE GAME |
SATURDAY NOV. 9 D10 CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP - West Middlesex 21, Eisenhower 17 |
ERIE - West Middlesex held off two late Eisenhower charges to defeat the
Knights 21-17 in the District 10 Class A Championship game Saturday
afternoon at Erie's Veteran's Stadium.
Eisenhower had the ball twice in the final three minutes inside the West Middlesex 15-yard line but could not score. The first time the Knights threw a 16-yard pass to the 4-yard line when they needed 18 yards on a fourth-and-18 from the 20 with 2:08 left in the game. But with three time-outs left, Eisenhower’s defense was able to hold the Big Red to a three-and-out. The Big Reds punt from the 12-yard line was then shanked out of bounds at the West Middlesex 26-yard line. A 1-yard run by Eisenhower quarterback Jacoby Curtis got the ball to the 25-yard line, and then a 15-yard pass by Curtis put the ball at the 10-yard line where the Knights had a first-and-10 with 47 seconds left. But Curtis’ first-down pass intended for Tyler Cathcart in the end zone was high and out of the end zone. Then on second down, Curtis was sacked back at the 21-yard line with 40 seconds left. Curtis then decided to spike the ball setting up a fourth-and-goal from the 21-yard line. On the fourth-down pass attempt, Curtis was sacked again back at the West Middlesex 29-yard line ending the Knights dream season at 7-4. West Middlesex used a trick play with just over four minutes left to win the game. Trailing 17-14, Big Red quarterback Jake Buzzard took the snap and threw a lateral to running back Dan Michalcak. Michalcak then threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Joe Habarka to put West Middlesex ahead 21-17. Eisenhower had broken a 7-7 halftime tie by outscoring West Middlesex 10-7 in the third quarter. The Knights came out of the locker room after halftime and made it 14-7 on a 77-yard run by Bart Moon. But the Big Red answered back scoring on a 2-yard run by Giani Ruffo to tie the game at 14. Jason Passinger put Eisenhower up 17-14 with a 43-yard field goal with the wind late in the third quarter. Passinger had a chance to add to the Knights lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but his 44-yard attempt into the wind fell short. The two teams then traded interceptions before West Middlesex scored to take the lead for good. West Middlesex led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 31-yard pass from Buzzard to Habarka, but Eisenhower tied the game at halftime on a 39-yard run by Mark Collins. Michalcak led West Middlesex with 24 carries for 106 yards, while Josh Fette added 10 carries for 35 yards. Buzzard carried the ball 14 times for 36 yards, while completing 5-of-7 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception. Curtis paced Eisenhower throwing for 111 yards with two interceptions, while Moon ran seven times for 96 yards and a score.
